AND THE RELATED ARTS AND
SCIENCES

The ABET* Definition of Engineering

“The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical or physical sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.”

* Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology

(FORMERLY THE ENGINEERS COUNCIL FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ECPD)

Neil Armstrong, one of the Apollo astronauts, has written

“Engineers are dedicated to solving problems and creating new, useful, and efficient things.”

The Canadian Academy of Engineering says

“Engineering is a profession concerned with the creation of new and improved systems, processes and products. The central focus of engineering is design, an art entailing the exercise of ingenuity, imagination, knowledge, skill, discipline and judgement based on experience.”

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is the skills, tools and machines used by members of a society to convert material objects [eg, natural RESOURCES] into products useful to themselves

In other words

Technology consists of the building blocks used to design finished products, equipment or systems for use by another

Engineering Related Arts and Sciences

ARTS

Related engineering arts mean practices which have been learned from trial and error and/or hands on experiments, which have been shown by repeated steps to work in a controlled manner.

SCIENCES

Related engineering sciences mean new technical knowledge which has been discovered, analyzed and is understood such that it can be defined, fully explained and applied in a repeatable and controlled fashion.

Application of related arts and sciences by engineers

The related arts and sciences are drawn upon and used by engineers when designing, prototyping, testing and proving their intended products, equipments and systems
