A Brief Emerging Tecnologies Overview

Transformers

TechnologiesDistribution Automation Intelligent Universal Transformer (EPRI) (see also under Transmission and Distribution), Superconducting Transformers.

DescriptionThe intelligent universal transformer (IUT) is a first-generation power-electronic replacement for conventional distribution transformers, featuring no liquid dielectrics (no costly spill cleanup), increased energy conversion efficiency at partial loads, real-time voltage regulation, monitoring capability (IUT diagnostics), parts-wise repair, communication link for use as distribution system monitoring nodes as part of a larger system-level monitoring and automation capability, supply of three-phase power from a single-phase circuit, reduced unit weight and size compared to conventional transformers, output ports for DC power and alternative AC frequencies, and interface with distributed generation.
