Abstract

SAMBA is a major advance in system interoperability from the Open Source community.SAMBA is software that allows a Linux or UNIX machine to act as a Windows server. It allows you to create a reliable file server or a shared printer for a network of vanilla Windows PCs. It has found use on ancient PCs in home networks and on high-end workstations integrated into large corporate Microsoft NT-centric networks.

The IEEE Computer Society will host the talk by Mr. George Haberberger on Wednesday, November 14th.The location is the Building 335 Cafeteria on the Xerox Webster Campus. There will be refreshments and friendly greetings starting at 5:30PM. The talk begins at 6PM. For directions and details see the Meeting Announcement or contact Andy Youngs at 726-1735.

George will cover the history and happenings of the Open Source Community then focus on SAMBA.He will cover where SAMBA fits in a network, the operating principles, and then cover the most important usage aspects. You will leave with a better appreciation of Open Source and be armed with the practical knowledge necessary to apply SAMBA to your own situation.
