Title: The Existential Threat of Climate Change: How Should We Respond?
This lecture will address what is climate change, what is causing it and how it is impacting the daily lives of citizens around the world. In the context the author will the issue of greenhouse gas emissions and how it can be reduced to help mitigate the effect of climate change.
There has been a major focus placed on the carbon produced through electricity generation, as it is responsible for roughly 30% of emissions globally, When focusing on the energy sector alone, it is apparent that nation states are coalescing into two groups when targeting carbon reductions:
As the former pushes the latter, which are heavily reliant on fossil fuels to transition towards renewable energy solutions in the future, there is a tension that needs to be navigated if we are to meet CO2 reduction targets globally- and they are, to be clear, shared targets.
A nuanced approach to navigating this tension will be presented which will require industrialized nation states to collaborate with emerging economies to deploy a portfolio of solutions with low-carbon generation including nuclear, hydrogen, storage and demand side management with advanced technology focusing on energy efficiency.

Title: Interference-Aware Design of 5G and Beyond Cellular Communication Systems
Abstract:
Interference has been an integral aspect of cellular communication systems since 2G, which strive for increasingly higher spectral efficiencies and reuse the scarce spectrum as aggressively as possible. 5G systems incorporate several new technologies to meet their diverse requirements. These have led to new sources of interferences and require a fresh look at cellular system design.
The talk focuses on understanding how interference and, equally importantly, the information available about it affect allocation and scheduling of scare wireless resources by the cellular base station. It takes a close look at two technologies, one of which is already in 5G while the other is being actively considered for 6G. The first technology is device-to-device or sidelink communications, which enables two vehicles or mobiles to talk directly with each other without routing their signals through the base station. The second technology is full-duplex radio, which promises to double the spectral efficiency by enabling a wireless node to transmit and receive simultaneously on the same band. We highlight the new sources of interference that arise in these and related technologies, and bring out some common threads in the design of interference-aware algorithms and protocols for them.

Title: Cyber Security of Cyber Physical Systems: A C3iHub Perspective
Abstract:
Much of our national critical infrastructure is based on Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) such as the power grid, oil and gas refineries and pipelines, water and sewage treatment systems, industrial automation etc. As a result, these are lucrative targets for nation state attackers and advanced persistent threat groups (APT). On the other hand, these systems being cyber physical are increasingly digital and network connected during IP convergence trends. These trends have given rise to a wide attack surface which cyber attackers continue to exploit. Cyber Security and Cyber Defense of such cyber physical systems is of paramount importance today. As part of the National Mission on CPS (NMCPS), we have established the national technology hub (TIH) on cyber security of cyber physical systems. In this talk we will outline the various cyber security research and technology development work in the C3iHub and explain some of the novel technologies developed and deployed in real industrial sites by the C3iHub.
