The mission of IEEE WIE is to Inspire,
Engage, Encourage, and Empower IEEE women worldwide.
IEEE
WIE DC/NoVA Goals for 2010
Our
goal this year is to Inspire,
Engage, Encourage, and Empower :
Girls
to take Courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, &
Mathematics (STEM);
IEEE Women and Men to support our Meetings & Events; and
Women
and Men working in Engineering fields to join IEEE & WIE.
WIE
Plans to Accomplish These Goals by...
Having
an Educational Outreach program and working with Elementary, Middle,
and High
Schools in our area.
Joining
with other Groups who are reaching out to Girls to take courses in
Science,
Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM).
Co-sponsoring
IEEE events with other IEEE Affinity Groups and Societies.
Networking
with IEEE members and non-IEEE members and inviting them to our
meetings &
events.
Having
a Membership program and providing incentives to new members for
joining IEEE
and WIE.
Keeping
our website updated with new events & meetings.
Marketing
our group using social networking tools.
Holding
meetings that are organized, fun, & different.
Holding
technical meetings that showcase Women in Engineering roles.
Having
activities for all to enjoy.
WIE
DC/NoVA 2010 Theme
Our theme this year is "Engineering
Girls"!!
The statistics on the number of women engineers in the United States is
just below ten percent. For WIE to be able to start closing this
gap in the National Capital Area, WIE has to focus on ways to get more
girls interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
courses.
If you are a School Teacher or if you have an academic program
geared to girls, WIE would be interested in working with you.
Please contact the current WIE Chair.

WIE
Chair's Report...
It has been a pleasure working with women
engineers in the DC Metro Area in 2009 and again in 2010. WIE had
fun last year and WIE plan to have more fun this year while WIE seek to
engineer more girls.
This year WIE have a lot planned as WIE seek to accomplish our
goals. In January 2010 WIE
held
an
administrative and social
meeting in VA and WIE welcomed our new officers. In February 2010 WIE attended the annual Officers training held in DC then
WIE
held
a
short
administrative
meeting
after.
In
February and March 2010 Lana
(WIE 2010 Secretary) and I met with the Clarksburg High School Robotics Clubin MD who were building a robot
that would play soccer for the FIRST Robotocs Competition. WIE
sponsored the Robotics club and they placed 22nd out of 60 teams.
In March WIE held a Workshop in MD to review activities
to be used for students at an exhibit or in schools. In March I also had to pleasure to
work with IEEE-USA and Society for
Women Engineers as WIE visited Capitol
Hill
and met with our Members of Congress to share our insight
on the Engineering Education for
Innovation (E2) Bill and asked them to co-sponsor the
bill. In April WIE ordered t-shirts
with the writing "I am a Woman
Engineer" and WIE created a poster board with our pictures and
profile. WIE exhibited local
Women in Engineering fields at the Rockville Science Day in MD and
provided three different engineering activities for the kids to work
on. Also in April Deirdre (WIE
2009 Treasurer), Lana, and myself served as Expert Judges at the
Montgomery Blair Magnet High School Program.
It is now May and WIE
attended the IEEE NCA Awards Banquet
where I had the honor of receiving the Washington
"Distinguished
Service
Award"
and an award
for being "Chair of the Women in
Engineering Chaper" in 2009. Other WIE Officers receiving
awards were Katie Schaffold (WIE 2010
Vice-Chair) received the Northern VA "Distinguished Service Award" and
Monica Taysing-Lara (WIE 2009 Membership-Chair) received the Washington
"Administrative Award".
WIE have lots more planned for the calendar year. Keep
checking our website for more information on our events and what we are
doing.
