IEEE Orlando Section - Chairman's Corner

 
We had our first meeting of the year in Shells, (Grady's was closed), I apologize if anybody tried to come to the meeting and couldn't find us. Good attendance, were able to do some planning for the year; we are planning to have two socials and we will organize some joint technical meetings to reactivate some of our inactive chapters. Southcon (Orlando Convention Center 15-17) had a good attendance, we visited the exhibit booths and attended the keynote speaker, Microelectronics Steve Drehobl, Vice-President of Microchip Technology, Inc, spoke about "The Embedded Control Universe" integration and embedded solutions, an excellent presentation that was complemented with a live demonstration via internet.
 
We attended the Florida Council Meeting, presented last year activity report and plans for current year, next Florida Council meeting will be on April 5 in Columbia North Carolina.
 
Our next meeting will be a joint meeting with the ED/CPMT and AESS Chapter, there will be a technical presentation, our guest speaker will be Dr. Kalpathy Sunderam, he will offer us a presentation on CMP Process in Microelectronics, Dr Peter Yuan, Chapter Chair will be the moderator, the meeting will be on Tuesday Feb. 5 at 6:00pm in Rm 288 Engineering Building UCF, there will be pizza and refreshments, this promises to be a very good meeting, you are all invited, don't miss it.
 
Our March meeting will also be a joint meeting, this time with COM/SP and Dr. Al Berg will talk about "Voice over IP Telephony".

Meet the new Chairman

 

Robert J. Pirela is the president of Engineering Professional Services, Inc. his Consulting firm, where he provides Engineering Consulting Services to the construction industry.

Before initiating EPS, Inc, He worked for major engineering consulting and industrial firms both locally and abroad; in his career, he has done design and consulting in various areas including, power, data processing, controls and telemetry.

Mr. Pirela has an extensive experience in power studies and issues related to coordination, harmonics, and short circuits; he regularly provides consulting services to Major Electrical Contractors and Fortune 500 companies in these areas.

He was born in Maracaibo Venezuela, went to school at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He holds a National Engineering Certification, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida and Alabama. He is a member of the Florida Engineering Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers. Mr. Pirela was recently listed in Who's Who Worldwide registry of Business Leaders and he and his family are active in their church.

Mr. Pirela is married to Cecilia (an MD) and they have two children Elizabeth and Alexander.
