IEEE Canadian Foundation Dr. Robert T.H Alden Scholarship

General

One scholarship known as The IEEE Canadian Foundation Dr. Robert T.H Alden Scholarship will be awarded annually for a student authoring a tutorial style article addressing innovative use of the internet, social media or other electronic media to foster interpersonal/group communication, collaboration or learning. The article should be suitable for publishing in an IEEE publication such as The IEEE Canadian Review, The Institute, Spectrum, IEEE Potentials, IEEE or Foundation social media or web site. Use of illustrations where appropriate are encouraged. The article must be minimum one full page (word count approx. 500 words). An abstract accompanied by an expression of interest to submit a finished article will also be considered

Preference may be given to material making reference to

  1. Bob Alden's internet article series (Travelling the Information Highway ) as homage, and also
  2. to the scholarship from the IEEE Canadian Foundation, so as to possibly stimulate donations.

The IEEE or publisher may edit the article(s) prior to publishing.

Copyright will be assigned to IEEE.

One scholarship in the amount of $1500 may be awarded annually and will be paid to the student's education institute following article selection by the ICF Board. The scholarship need not be awarded in a given year if no suitable applications are received. Acceptance of an article and subsequent awarding of the scholarship funds does not automatically imply the article will be published. Recommendation for publication will be made by the ICF, but final decision will be made through the entity’s acceptance process. Applicants must be in the penultimate year of their undergraduate program, or earlier.

All student members of the IEEE who are registered in an Engineering or Computer Science program at a Canadian University or College are eligible.

Submission

The article must be submitted on-line using the "applications" link on the left side of this page by March 15. The article is to be submitted in (MS Word or editable PDF) format as an attachment to the online form.

The Decision Process

The Grants Committee of the IEEE Canadian Foundation will review and rank the applications and forward their recommendations to the Board of Directors of the IEEE Canadian Foundation who will determine the recipient at their first meeting of each year, normally held in early April.

Notification
Nominees will be notified via e-mail by the Foundation, as soon as possible following the meeting of the Board of Directors. The recipient's University (or College) will be contacted by the Foundation regarding the awarding of the scholarship and financial arrangements. Payment will be made directly to the educational institution. Successful candidates will be requested to provide a profile photograph suitable for publication with the article.

Certificate
A framed certificate will be presented to the Scholarship recipient by the Section Chair at a suitable IEEE (Branch or Section) meeting. The certificate will be prepared by the ICF Treasurer. The framing of the certificate is the responsibility of the Section. Note Nominations must be complete and received by the posted deadline of Mar 15 in order to be considered.
