IEEE Canadian Foundation Dr. John William Bandler Graduate Scholarship in Engineering Design

General  
The IEEE Canadian Foundation awards one annual Dr. John William Bandler Graduate Scholarship in Engineering Design (the “Bandler Scholarship”) of CAD$5,000.

Description
The Bandler Scholarship recognizes and furthers Dr. Bandler’s academic legacy, lifetime research, and entrepreneurial and mentoring achievements.

Every gift has an impact and is greatly appreciated by Beth Bandler who established this scholarship with her principal gift and by the IEEE Canadian Foundation as the host of this scholarship.

Criteria for Award of Scholarship  
Criteria for selection of a recipient from the applicants are set out below:

  1. Each recipient of the Bandler Scholarship shall be a (i) graduate student in the second or a subsequent year of a PhD program in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in a Canadian university, or (ii) recent PhD graduate for a one-year post doctorate fellowship (a “Post Doc”) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in a Canadian university.


  2. And

  3. Each recipient must be studying and conducting research in an area in one of the following topics in the spirit of Dr. Bandler’s scientific research: (i) electromagnetic optimization in microwave and millimeter-wave engineering, or (ii) engineering design optimization, or (iii) space mapping with the cognitive and neuroscientific aspects thereof, or (iv) microwave/millimeter-wave imaging and inverse-scattering problems, or (v) any combination of the foregoing. An applicant doing research to further Dr. Bandler’s work and direction on cognitive aspects of space mapping must be supervised at the Canadian university by an expert in space mapping and be co-supervised by one or more external experts in space mapping.


  4. And

  5. Each recipient must have an outstanding academic record (top 20 % of graduate students in the program). Course marks equal to or greater than 85% (A or A+) in all graduate courses the applicant has completed. If the applicant has not yet completed any graduate courses, or has completed only one graduate course, the cumulative grade point average (GPA) score from the undergraduate studies is to be considered with the same criterion of equal to or greater than 85% (A or A+).


  6. And

  7. Each recipient must have a commendable publication record for a student or Post Doc at their level plus a strong written endorsement from the thesis or research supervisor certifying that the applicant is the principal author of such publications.
    1. For a graduate student, a commendable publication record means (i) one or more published or accepted papers in a refereed scientific or engineering journal; or (ii) one or more presented or accepted papers for an international scientific or engineering conference with published conference proceedings; or (iii) one or more best student paper awards (1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize) in an international scientific or engineering conference, such as relevant IEEE sponsored symposia.
    2. For a Post Doc, a commendable publication record should include several publications and possibly some student paper awards. Two journal papers and two conference papers per year are considered reasonable for Post Doc engineering candidates.


  8. And

  9. Each recipient must have commendable communication skills, be a strong collaborator and/or a leader who helps other students achieve excellence as described by the thesis or research supervisor in a written endorsement letter.


  10. And

  11. Each recipient must confirm his or her intent to stay in Canada for a minimum of one year following the receipt of the PhD or the Post Doc fellowship.


  12. Provided that:

  13. In the event there is more than one qualified applicant the preference shall be to award the Bandler Scholarship to the individual doing research to further Dr. Bandler’s work and direction on cognitive aspects of space mapping, including the “games” developed by Dr. Bandler.

Application Requirements  
A complete application includes:
  1. a written nomination letter from the Nominator in support of the applicant’s declaration including the name, address and position of the supervisor (if the Nominator is not the supervisor) and co-supervisors. In the case of a graduate student applicant, the “Nominator” must be a faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Canadian university currently attended by the graduate student. In the case of a Post Doc the “Nominator” must be the applicant’s supervisor from the university granting the applicant’s PhD.
  2. an application or declaration form completed by the applicant;
  3. certified copies of transcripts from the university or universities the applicant attended; and
  4. written endorsement letter or letters from the thesis or research supervisor(s) in compliance with the requirements set out in paragraphs 4 and 5 above.
Submission Process  
The Nominator and the applicant’s documents must be submitted on-line using the “applications and nominations” link on the left side of this page by March 15. Applicants submit the declaration together with transcripts, and the endorsement letters first, which are then automatically routed to the Nominator for the Nominator to submit the nomination letter. On submission both the Applicant and the Nominator will receive an online acknowledgement and an emailed acknowledgement. Decision Process  
The selection of recipients for the Bandler Scholarship is made and approved by a minimum of three leading experts in microwave engineering research, acting as a Selection Committee. The Selection Committee may decide not to award a Bandler Scholarship in a given year if there is not a suitable candidate.

  • Raafat R. Mansour, Professor – Canada Research Chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
  • Michel Nakhla, Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus, Department of Electronics, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
  • Dr. Natalia K. Nikolova, Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
  • Dr. José E. Rayas-Sánchez, Director of CAECAS Research Group, ITESO – The Jesuit University of Guadalajara, Mexico
Notification  
Applicants and Nominators will be notified via e-mail by the IEEE Canadian Foundation as soon as possible following the determination by the Selection Committee, typically by the end of May. Payment of the scholarship award to the recipient of the Bandler Scholarship will be made to the recipient’s student account at their Canadian university mid-August or paid as otherwise agreed with the recipient, subject to applicable law and regulation.

IEEE Membership  
While not required, recipients of the Bandler Scholarship will be strongly encouraged to take up IEEE membership for their own professional and career benefit.

Certificate  
The Bandler Scholarship recipient will receive a recognition certificate prepared by the Foundation which may also be presented at a suitable IEEE event.
