Obituary of Professor Eloi Ngandui

Photo Eloi Ngandui Our colleague and friend Eloi Ngandui left at 43 years of age on December 22, 2009 after having fought cancer courageously.

Originating from Cameroun, Eloi obtained the diploma of Professor with honourable mention from Ecole Normale Superieure de l'Enseignement Technique (ENSET), University of Douala, Cameroun, in 1987 and Master and Ph.D in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal in 1991 and 1997 respectively. Eloi joined the UQTR department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in August 1998 after being consultant at the Jewish General Hospital of Montreal, part-time lecturer at UQAC and Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, and assistant professor at ENSET, University of Douala.

Eloi occupied an important place at the university by his sustained involvement in university life. Eloi reorganized and modernized his courses and knew how to give the students an extremely relevant training that was sought by industry. His research activities on Power Quality brought him and his students to visit installations at the university and many companies in the region. His rigour was recognized in his publications, which multiplied with the years. He was also an excellent collaborator which strongly contributed to his successes as the Hydro-Quebec Research Chair on Power and Electrical Energy and in the Research Group in Industrial Electronics which he directed these last years. A member of the UQTR research committee, he contributed to university visibility by his involvement in the executive committee of the IEEE St-Maurice Section, as a Senior Member since 2002, by his participation in the organizing committees of international conferences and membership in editorial committees and as Associate Editor of IASTED's International Journal of Power and Energy Systems, since 2001.

Eloi leaves in mourning his Wife Marie-Agathe and his three sons Brice, Noel and Franck. God blesses them. He was a devoted person which did not spare its efforts to allow its sons to develop in sports and to pass through difficult times.

During his short passage among us at UQTR, Eloi had many friends and marked several of us by his love of life, his human qualities, his dynamism and his professionalism.

His students, colleagues and friends will remember a large sportsman with the radiant smile and a great rigour in all the things he undertook.

In honor of the long association of Dr. Eloi Ngandui with IEEE St-Maurice Section, IEEE Montreal Conferences Inc. (MCI) has decided to name a Bursary presented annually at the Bell Expo Sciences exposition for high school students. This bursary is a cash award of $750.00 to be given to the best project in Computing.

When IEEE MCI combined with the IEEE Canadian Foundation, this tradition was continued using MCI funds in the foundation.
