SHORT DESCRIPTION

ISIS Canada, a federal Networks of Centres of Excellence program, is a collaborative effort of industry, government agencies and Canadian universities specializing in civil, mechanical, materials, aerospace, and electrical engineering. The role of ISIS Canada is to help revolutionize the design of civil engineering structures by creating and demonstrating innovative "smart" structures. Innovative designs and rehabilitation techniques are made possible through the use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) for strengthening, in place of traditional corrosion-prone steel, which leads to structural deterioration. Structures are made "smart" by installing fibre optic sensors and monitoring internal stresses through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technology. The objective is to have civil engineering structures that are more economical to build, require less maintenance and have a much longer service life.
