The talk was on the page rank algorithm is a landmark in Internet search, as it provides a rational way to arrive at a ranking of the "importance" of various web sites. The essence of the algorithm is to set up a random walk on a graph, or equivalently, a finite-state Markov process, and computing its stationary distribution. Subsequently the same approach has been applied to other branches of engineering, such as arriving at a consensus, "gossiping", and so on. Most recently, a somewhat similar approach has been applied to determine so-called "genetic machines" in cancer biology, that is, sets of genes that are all over-active or all under-active in a cancer patient.

The talk was on Cloud computing which is now actively in mainstream adoption, with most of the dust setting down. The new value system enabled by the cloud is now widely understood. From the disruptive SaaS models of software distribution and licensing to the elastic computing platforms now made easily available to one and all. While SaaS & IaaS are actively embraced by the enterprises with help from ISVs/Sis, the home- grown enterprise solutions are still behind the curve. Also just beginning is the new class of solutions that leverage the distributed and homogeneous nature of the IT solutions landscape now, with solutions on the web or intranet all easily accessible from web browsers and programmatically through web-services. This talk will reflect upon the present state of the cloud-computing space and some trends to expect in coming months and years.
