Location :
Vellore's popularity across the country is mainly because of Christian Medical College (CMC) and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). The nearest airports are the Chennai airport about 130 km to the east of Vellore and the Bangalore airport about 205 km to the west of Vellore. One can reach Vellore from Chennai either by train or by road in about 3 hours. The nearest railway junction, Katpadi junction is just 3 Km from VIT.
Weather:
Summer (April to September) is pleasant in the mornings and evenings, hot and humid during afternoons, with temperature ranging from 30°C to 45°C. Winter (November to January) is cold with temperature ranging from 10°C to 25°C. It’s rainy during October-November and February- March which adds on to the scenic beauty of greenery around the campus.
Transport:
In-campus: Cycles are preferably used by students inside the campus; however autos, university-run buses and shuttle cabs are also popular. Off-campus: Buses to Bangalore, Chennai, Mamallapuram leave from New-Bus stand. Buses to relatively nearby places like Bagayam, Golden Temple, leave from Old-bus stand near CMC Vellore.
Accommodation :
There are 12 men’s hostels and 6 ladies’ hostels to accommodate the students, as for the teachers a separate residential complex is available. The Institute also has its own Guest houses to house all University and other guests.
Restaurants:
Within the campus premises, there are several food joints namely Food Court, Baker’s Bay, SJT canteen and GDN canteen where all sorts of delicacies are available with respect to people’s preferred choices among north-Indian, south-Indian, Chinese and continental dishes as fast foods as well as main course meals. That apart there are Nescafe and Aavin stalls at various parts of the campus.
Outside the campus, ‘Crisps n Creams’ , ‘Big Chick’, ‘Flo Café’ and ‘Café Coffee Day’ are the main centres of attraction for snacks, bakery and continental food articles. Tom’s Diner is a place for people who favour American dishes. Bihari Dhaba, Valley Junction, Saleem’s, Limra, Andhra Spice, Olive kitchen, Universal bakers and Apna Dhaba are some of the preferred eateries in the campus vicinity for vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian delights. In Vellore city, 100’s heritage, GRT, Hotel Riverview, Lalit Vihar, China Town and Darling Residency are some of the most popular restaurants.
Bank:
There are two banks associated with the university. ‘Indian bank’ is located just outside the campus, in the VIT supermarket area near gate no. 2. ‘City Union Bank’ is located near the CDMM building. The State Bank of India (SBI) is located near Chittoor bus stand, about 2Km from the campus main gate. ATM of several banks are provided within the college campus and hostel campus such as HDFC, IOB, SBI, Indian Bank and City Union Bank. Several ATM machines are placed in various locations in and out of the campus.
Post Office:
The post office is located adjacent to the Indian Bank, in the supermarket area of VIT University, near gate no.2. Full postal and telegraphic services are available at the Post office.
Shops and Market:
A super market, AlMart, is located just outside the campus where one can find everything they may require in their day to day activities. Ellora gift shop opposite VIT Main gate is a nice place to buy tokens and gifts from. Within the campus, Balaji bookstore sells all kinds of books and stationeries, art items, fashion items at a discounted rate.
Long bazaar, MG Road, Sarathy mansion areas, near CMC Vellore area are home to a series of jewellery shops, upholsteries shops, garments shops, utensils shop, electronic items shops.
Hospitals: The Institute has its very own medical centre, the Health Centre, where students can go and visit any specialty doctor. That apart, there is the renowned CMC Vellore Hospital, Shri Narayani Hospital, Vasan Eye Care, Nalam Hospital, Baba hospital, Sharda otrhopediac center, Appolo KH and other hospitals are also located in a 15 km radius. Places to visit : Vellore is well-known in history for the Vellore Fort which witnessed the first war of Indian Independence. Other places of historical importance are: Zion hill church and Church of South India. Vallimalai and Villapakkam are two places of archaeological significance. Asia’s largest telescope is located at Kavallure Observatory. Other common tourist attraction spots are Ratnagiri temple, Golden Temple, Palamathi, Vassur (among nearby ones) and Amirthi Zoological park, Javadu Hills, Yelagiri Hills (at distances greater than 30km).
