Description

Now in its 8th year, the IEEE GHTC is an international flagship conference on the application of technology to meet the needs of underserved populations around the world and in support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

To this end, a major focus is on cross-discipline/multi-discipline activities in the Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Technology space. An important focus is on community building. Humanitarian Technology/Engineering involves the application of technology to improve the quality of life of the underserved populations, and to meet the challenges of both natural and man-made disasters.

GHTC strongly encourages submissions that utilize both applications of current technologies used in new ways and innovative technologies that address its goals. These submissions can include presentations, posters, workshops, panel discussions, and other formats which address the socio-cultural and socio-economical needs of vulnerable end user communities in both developed and developing countries. Submissions by public, private and end-user community representatives are very welcome.

Want to attend GHTC 2018? Registration is opening soon! GHTC registration includes access to all technical sessions, invited speakers, lunches, breaks, the program and the GHTC 2018 Proceedings.

Author guidelines

Papers must be submitted via the EDAS Paper Processing System

Authors may submit content in the form of a technical paper, a special session, or a poster presentation.

  • Technical paper | 500 word abstract, 8 page paper, and 20 minute talk: Technical papers communicate the thought process behind a development project from concept to construction. The papers discuss the motivation, background, methodology, outcomes, and conclusions of work completed. Guidelines for delivering a technical paper can be found here.

  • Special session | 200 word abstract, optional paper (8 -10 pages max), and 30-90 minute talk: Interactive sessions, tutorials, panels, workshops, and demonstrations are examples of special sessions. One or more presenters can organize and give a special session. Special sessions should have some form of audience interaction (e.g., Q&A with panelists, hands-on workshop, break-out into groups, best practices and lessons learned discussions facilitated by session leaders). Guidelines for delivering a special session can be found here.

  • Poster Presentation | 2 page paper: This year we are integrating all accepted submissions into sessions in relevant tracks.

If your submission was accepted for a Poster presentation, your submission will be published in the conference proceedings, and as a "Teaser Abstract" in IEEE Xplore.

Please prepare a slide deck using the GHTC 2018 template suitable for delivery in maximum 10 minutes (8 minutes presentation, 2 minutes Q&A). Your slide deck should have a maximum of 10 slides and include your paper reference and family name in the file name.

Please ensure that in addition to addressing Context and Socio-Cultural and Technology Adaptation and Adoption related issues, your presentation highlights Objectives, Methodology, Summary Results, Lessons Learnt and Conclusions/Recommendations/Next Steps.

Please submit your PowerPoint at least two weeks in advance of the conference so sessions chairs have time to review, provide any necessary feedback and prepare for the session in which your presentation will be delivered.

A submission should emphasize at least one of the conference topics found through this link. Authors will be asked to indicate the main theme of their submission. GHTC welcomes papers and posters on humanitarian technologies and their deployment. Papers should include a discussion of factors such as economics, policy, culture, and environment that impact successful humanitarian technology implementation. Proposals for case studies, panel discussions, and workshops on humanitarian technologies are welcome.
