Workshop on “The Future of Humanoid Robots in the Aerospace Industry”

at 2014 IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots

(HUMANOIDS 2014)

Motivation

The aerospace industry moves towards highly advanced automated and intelligent systems. Aerospace production is a relatively slow, low-volume, high-value process compared to other manufacturing. The ‘volume’ demand is not the product throughput, but rather the high number of process steps required to complete the plane. The aerospace companies are using robots and automated guided vehicles for automating applications for the same reasons other industries, like automotive, have been using them. The use of humanoid robots will be a reality in the next future. In both aeronautical and space applications humanoids robots will play a key role. In the field of aeronautical applications, robotic manufacturing performs drilling, sealing and dispensing, repetitive welding, deburring, and other tasks like  inspection will predominate, e.g. in composite material handling, advanced manufacturing collaborative work, hazardous environment inspections in the aircrafts, etc. In the field of space the emerging applications are satellite manipulation in space, robotized experimentation in space crafts, planetary exploration, etc. Both of them will use transverse technologies and crossover fertilization based on intelligent HMI, data fusion, big data management, ground segment software systems, and advanced dynamic simulators.

 Objective

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers from the Aerospace industries and related communities, as well as other researchers interested in the subject. The half-day program will consist of invited talks, contributed presentations, and a panel discussion.
