5th International Symposium on
Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems

October 4-6, 2000, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

After four successful symposia (1992, 1994, 1996, and 1998) in Japan and Germany, the Fifth International Symposium on Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems (DARS 2000) was held at the Knoxville Hilton in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. Knoxville is located in scenic eastern Tennessee, with easy access to the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains National Park. DARS 2000 was hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, located nearby.

DARS is one of the fastest-growing and most fascinating subjects in robotics, and has attracted more and more world-wide attention in the past decade. The goal of the DARS 2000 symposium was to provide an opportunity for the international community of researchers to discuss the state of the art and future directions of complex distributed autonomous robotic systems.

The DARS 2000 symposium emphasized new strategies for realizing complex, modular, robust, and fault tolerant systems. The topics discussed include architectures and development environments, communication and knowledge sharing, biological inspirations, reconfigurable robots, distributed localization, exploration, mapping, and model acquisition, distributed sensing, multi-robot motion coordination and tracking, multi-robot learning, and cooperative object transport. The presentations in this single-track symposium were contributed by leading researchers from 12 countries of Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and provided a unique cutting-edge perspective on distributed multi-robot systems.

NOTE: The DARS 2000 proceedings are available from Springer-Verlag as Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems 4, edited by Lynne E. Parker, George Bekey, and Jacob Barhen, ISBN: 4-431-70295-44.
