ICINCO is a unique forum for universities, research groups and research projects to present their research and scientific results, be it by presenting a paper, hosting a tutorial or instructional course or demonstrating its research products in demo sessions, by contributing towards panels and discussions in the event's field of interest or by presenting their project, be it by setting up an exhibition booth, by being profiled in the event's web presence or printed materials or by suggesting keynote speakers or specific thematic sessions.

Special conditions are also available for Research Projects which wish to hold meetings at INSTICC events.

RobLog


The RobLog project (Cognitive Robot for Automation of Logistics Processes) is aimed to broaden the research scope in the field of cognitive robotics in the automation of logistics, addressing the problem of unloading of containers. Two major goals have been pursued. First (1) the unloading of goods in an industrial scenario, where an industrial demonstrator, a cognitive autonomous system for the unloading of industrial goods (coffee bags and other sack-shaped goods), has been developed. Also (2) result scientific and technological results achieved within RobLog have been synthesized and integrated in a second cognitive autonomous system demonstrator, called advanced demonstrator, which is able to unload a wider range of items. With the goal of the integration of these two demonstrators, within RobLog numerous advancement and innovations have been developed, specifically in the field of grasping, sensing and perception, semantic mapping, motion planning, collision avoidance, surveillance and robot kinematics. RobLog contributed to advancing the general community knowledge with about fifty-three (53) publications between articles and papers some of which presenting jointed results of different partners. The project was also showcased in two industrial and one scientific fair: LogiMat 2013, CeMAT 2014 and ICRA 2013. The RobLog project enhanced the cooperation between industry and scientific institutions by providing a mean of transferring technologies and knowledge between these two different and too often separated world. The foregrounds brought by the RobLog project helped Europe defending and empowering its leadership in robotics.

RoboSoft Coordination Action on Soft Robotics


RoboSoft (https://www.robosoftca.eu/) is an EU-funded Coordination Action (CA) under the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open Scheme (FP7-ICT-2013-C project #619319), that organizes a series of scientific and technical events and activities for Soft Robotics to unify and extend the research community, to promote the visibility of soft robotics towards industrial stakeholders and special interest research groups and to provide opportunities for better exploiting the potential of soft robots and technologies in future ICT. 

RoboSoft, coordinated by Prof. Cecilia Laschi (The BioRobotics Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy) in partnership with the ETH Zurich (Switzerland), the University of Cambridge (UK) and the University of Bristol (UK), has involved 38 major research laboratories and institutions at European and international level working in the field of soft robotics to become Members of the RoboSoft Community and to take part to the scientific initiatives. The annual Soft Robotics Week, with the plenary meeting of the RoboSoft Community and the Summer School, academia-industry meetings, special sessions and workshops at international conferences, and the RoboSoft Grand Challenge, are just some of the initiatives organized by RoboSoft.

SMART-E


SMART-E is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Initial Training Network (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN #608022) that aims to prepare the next generation of leading Advanced Roboticists to ensure a Sustainable Manufacturing sector in Europe.

SMART-E has built a transnational network of universities and robot companies with world leading experts in the fields of Embodied Intelligence, Soft Robotics, Compliant Robotics, Smart Materials, Safety and human-machine interaction, Autonomous systems, dexterous end effectors and statistics, who are training 13 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) and 2 Experienced Researchers (ERs) by developing a leading European doctoral training programme in Advanced Robotics Technologies with improved career perspectives in both academia and industry.

SmokeBot


SmokeBot is driven by the application needs for robots that operate in domains with restricted visibility. The focus is on civil robots supporting fire brigades in search and rescue missions, e.g. in post-disaster management operations in response to tunnel fires. Existing sensor technology and the related cognitive approaches cannot cope with such demanding conditions. SmokeBot addresses this shortcoming and can thus bring about a step change for robotics. It will deliver software and hardware components which facilitate robot systems to perform under harsh conditions of smoke, dust or fog.

The ability to operate under low visibility conditions will be demonstrated through integration of the project results in an industrial prototype of a Low Visibility Explorer Robot for providing situational awareness based on a commercial platform from partner taurob. In close collaboration with the Fire Department Dortmund and other end users in the advisory group, SmokeBot will crucially improve the abilities of the selected platform, thus increasing safety of rescue staff and European citizens.

An even wider impact is expected through the development of a novel sensor unit and the corresponding cognitive approaches. In addition to traditional sensors such as LIDAR and cameras, which are affected by smoke or dust, this sensing unit includes also a novel 3D radar camera, a stereo thermal camera, and high-bandwidth gas sensors. Fusion of sensor modalities in an RGT-V unit (radar, gas sensors, thermal cameras - vision) will allow the inclusion of measurements from LIDAR and camera into the world model when they occasionally penetrate through e.g. smoke. In addition, we will develop the means to integrate prior knowledge in the form of crude human sketch maps to allow for robust mapping and navigation even under conditions of low visibility. Sensor technology from SmokeBot will result in new products to be brought to market after the project. Software developed will be made available as open source.

TRAX


TRAX is an Initial Training Network that is funded by the European Union under the Marie Curie Actions in the 7thFramework Program. A total of 15 fellows, 12 Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and 3 Experienced Researchers (ER) are being trained. TRAX concentrates on Tracking in Complex Sensor Systems, focusing on complexities due to large volumes of data, complex object dynamics and measurement models, as well as large scale systems. Examples of such systems are found in the area of cognitive mobile systems for highly dynamic and complex traffic scenarios; inertial human body tracking; localization in wireless mobile sensor systems; and surveillance in maritime and urban environments. TRAX brings together various European industrial and academic key players in the field of advanced techniques for sensor data processing to develop and execute a multidisciplinary and networked European research training programme. The TRAX consortium comprises the University of Sheffield and Rinicom Ltd. from the United Kingdom; Linköping University and Ericsson AB from Sweden; Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) from Germany; the University of Twente, Xsens Technologies B.V., and Thales Nederland B.V. from the Netherlands; and is supported by two associated partners SME SenionLab A.B. and University of Bonn.
