World RobotContests (WRCC) 2018 - Youth Design Contest

I.Overview

To implement thepolicies and regulations on strengthening sci-tech innovation education ofteenagers in China’s 13th Five-Year Plan, and to promote the sci-tech educationfocusing on arousing teenagers’ interests in science, developing teenagers’consciousness of self-dependent innovation, and improving teenagers’ ability ofhands-on practice, Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), with its ownofficial and professional platform, rich resources for high-end events, mature organizingpractices, as well as collective wisdom and efforts, holds the World RobotContests 2018 - Youth Design Contest for teenagers from elementary school tohigh school.

II. Arrangements

(I)WRCC 2018 –STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

1. Brief Introduction

The contest mainly evaluates players’ building and programmingabilities with specified hardware. The players need to control their robots tocomplete 5 missions as soon as possible.

2. Overview of the Rules

1) Length

Thelength of each game is 4 minutes.

2)Robot building

Robotsare built and programmed in advance.

3) Starting

Thecontest starts at the referee’s whistle.

4) Missions

Thereare five missions (100 points in total).

Beforethe contest, the players draw lots for corresponding missions.Mission 1:(Choose the right answer) Knock off the table tennis ball on the top of theyogurt bottle marked with the right answer (The yogurt bottle is placed mouthupward, and the players need to knock off the ball to score);

A.Mission 2: (Knock off the table tennisballs) Knock off the 2 table tennis balls in the mission area -- 10 points for each and 20 points in total;

B.Mission 3: (Sum) Move 2 wooden cubesmarked with numbers into the mission area to form a sum that equals 9 -- 10points for each wooden cube moved into the designated area, 20 points in total,and 30 points for the correct sum.

C.Mission 4: (Lucky ball) Push 2 golf ballsdown a slope to the slots marked with 8, 9, and 10 points. If the ball fallsinto the 8-point slot, the player scores 8 correspondingly (10 points formaximum, 20 points in total);

D.Mission 5: (Transport) Transport a 100px3woodencube to the designated area (the block shouldfollow the robot to the designatedarea, rather than be pushed from the gap) (20 points in total)

5) Scoring

Aftercompleting all missions and reaching the endpoint,the player getsa basic time score. The first scores100, the second scores 99, and the scores decrease for laterarrivers. The player's final score is the total of his basic score and missionscore.

6) The contestshould bestopped immediately if:

①The robot completes the missions and reaches the endpoint.

②The robot stays longer than 10 seconds in the contest.

③The player touches the robot during the game.

④The robot has an error and cannot continue the mission.

⑤If the robot moves other contest devices (mission items, table tennisballs, yogurt bottles, or other robot accessories) out of the measuring system,the contestshould be stopped and the robotscores 0.

7) The player shouldcarefully examine the robot before the contest, and cannot touch the robotwithout the referee’s permission when the contest is paused due to damage of therobot, dropping of modules, or any other accidents. If the robot operates well,the game goes on with the referee’s permission, or the contestshould bestopped.

8) Upon the referee’snotification, players should place their robots at the designated startingpoint and wait.

9)Guidance and examination of the robotshould be completed before the contest. Players should follow the referee’sarrangement and enter in order. Each mission should be challenged only once,and the scoresare added to the final score.

10) The robot shouldcomplete the five missions as soon as possible while passing through oravoiding barriers.

11) The player can onlycontrol the robot from the designated location (Leaving the designated locationduring the game leads to disqualification).

12) The timing starts asthe player enters the designated area and the robot passes the timing device(100 points for maximum).

13) The robot needs to gothrough 2 barrier areas, a slope (75px high) and a speed bump (4mm thick).

14) The robot needs toavoid the 6 yogurt bottles with table tennis balls on the top. 5 points arededucted every time the robot knocks off a table tennis ball, but no deduction isgiven if the robot hit the yogurt bottle without knocking off any ball.

15) Every player gets atable tennis ball from the lottery wheel (30 balls for grade 1-3, and 50 forgrade 4-6) before the contest, and sends the robot to knock off the tabletennis ball representing the right answer in the game.

16) It’s on the player’sown risk if the contest is paused due to the blocking of table tennis balls or woodencubes.

17) If the mission items havepassed the timing device and the timing device has made a record, the missionis completed and the time score is 0.

18) Players should signtoconfirm the contest result recorded by the referee after the game.

(V) WRCC 2018 -Critical hit

1. Brief Introduction

With the givenprogramming cards and the card reader, the player programs the robot to throwout the ball from the start point to knock down as many bowling pins aspossible.

2. Overview of the Rules

1) Robots are placed at the start point.

2) The length of the contest is 3 minutes.

A. The programming must be done on site with the programming cards andthe card reader (provided by the organizing committee, including If A, Forward,If Not, Stop, Repeat, and the cardreader). If the player cannot complete the card reading, the referee should help,but the player won’t get the points for card reading. The card reading time isnot included in the 3-minute contests andis only for the first round.

B. After completing the card-reading and programming, the player cancontrol his robot for the contest.

3) Every player can play two rounds, with 3 times ball (3 Goma as balls) throwfor each round, and only 1 ball can be used for each throw).

4) During the game, the player is allowed to support the robot with hands(to avoid swinging).

5) The bowling pins knocked down mean the points the player gets.

6) One bowling pin scores 1 point.

7) The 6 throws during the two rounds are added to the player’s totalpoints, and the player scoring higher wins.

8) In the case of a tie, the playerscoring higher for the first throw wins; if it’s a tie for the first throw,then the player scoring higher for the second throw wins, and so on.
