Felicitation of Padma Shri Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay and Sir J.C. Bose Milestone Lecture

IEEE Kolkata Section jointly with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University took the privilege to felicitate Padma Shri Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India. The felicitation program started with the welcome address delivered by Prof. Sushmita Mitra, Chair, IEEE Kolkata Section who spoke about her personal interaction with Prof. Bandyopadhyay. The formal introduction of Prof. Bandyopadhyay was done by Prof. Sudipta Chattopadhyay, EXCOM member and Professional Activity Committee Chair of IEEE Kolkata Section by presenting her biography. On behalf of IEEE Kolkata Section, Prof. Sushmita Mitra did the honours to Prof. Bandyopadhyay by presenting a beautiful plaque to her. On request, Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay shared her success journey which was a true motivation to all, especially, to the young women engineers and researchers. Many of her close acquaintances along with her husband, Prof. Ujjwal Maulik shared their experiences about Prof. Bandyopadhyay which was truly a source of inspiration to the audience present over there. After the felicitation Program, the prestigious "Sir J.C. Bose Milestone Lecture was delivered by Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay on "Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare Solutions". She focused on the applicability of Artificial Intelligence in various health related issues, mainly, early detection of the cancerous cells in human bodies. The topic of lecture was so much relevant to the present scenario that it created a great impact on the audience. The question-answer session was really interesting. The overall program was conducted by Dr. Mousiki Kar, Chair, IEEE Kolkata Section SIGHT Group. In total, a number of 75 participants from industry and academia attended this event. The Milestone Lecture ended at 7:30 p.m. after which a social interaction and networking dinner was organized at Mainland China, South City Mall. Finally, the event ended at 10:30 p.m. with the wholehearted satisfaction of the IEEE members for being a part of this great physical event after such a long COVID break.

Sir C.V. Raman Milestone Lecture

IEEE Kolkata Section organized "Sir CV Raman Milestone Lecture" virtually on July 26, 2022 at 5:00 pm. This Milestone Lecture was delivered by Dr. Ranjan K. Mallik, Institute Chair Professor and J.C. Bose Fellow, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, on "Channel Capacity of Asymmetric Constellations in Rayleigh Fading with Non-coherent and Coherent Detection". This event was conducted and moderated by Prof. Sudipta Chattopadhyay, EXCOM member and Professional Activity Committee Chair of IEEE Kolkata Section. The event started with the welcome address delivered by Prof. Sushmita Mitra, Chair of IEEE Kolkata Section. She heartily welcomed the Speaker as well as the audience to this prestigious Milestone Lecture. Prof. Chattopadhyay formally introduced the speaker by reading out his biography. Prof. Mallik mainly focused on the noncoherent reception of multi-level one-sided Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) in Rayleigh fading environment with receive diversity, where constellation asymmetry results in a capacity achieving input or a priori probability distribution that deviates from uniformity. The derived analytical expressions and numerical results of the relevant parameters were also discussed at length. The lecture continued till 6:30 pm after which the house was opened for question-answer session. Interesting questions were raised by some of the participants which were addressed and clarified by the speaker. In total, 35 participants attended this Milestone Lecture from industry and academia. Finally, the event ended at 6:45 pm with the vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Chattopadhyay. After this lecture, a sumptuous dinner was organized at "The Pavilion", Calcutta Club from 7:00 pm for social interaction and networking amongst the IEEE members after a long break of COVID 19 which finally ended at 10:30 pm.

Workshop on Curriculum Development for Accreditation

Advancement of technologies in various area demands its incorporation in the existing curriculum in engineering field. In order to identify and discuss about the recent development in science and technology area, a 2-day workshop was conducted. In the workshop, the experts from various areas of science and technology were invited. A detailed discussion was held in the workshop to identify the recent development of science and technology. In the discussion, ideas about the advanced developed technologies were exchanged among the experts. Based on that, few areas were identified which is suitable for incorporating in the curriculum of under-graduate and post-graduate students. These identified areas on the recent development have been documented. A proposal will be sent to the various academic bodies to incorporate the identified areas of recent development on their curriculum to enrich the academician to enrich their knowledge about the advanced technologies in various engineering and technologies field.

Women's Day Celebration 2022

Celebrated annually on March 8th, International Women's Day is a day to celebrate globally the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This day is also a day to check how far women have come up in their fight for their rights. This year the theme was #BreakTheBias.
To celebrate this special day, IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Kolkata Section organised a talk on "Personal Branding" as women often either neglect it or are too shy to practice. The talk was delivered by Sri. Buddheswar Roy. Sri. Roy is a Mechanical Engineer from B.E. College (D.U), Shibpore (Presently IIEST) in 2002 and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from London Business School (LBS). He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from PMI, USA and Certified Lead Quality Auditor in ISO 9001 from DNV. He is CIPS (Advance Diploma) in Procurement & Supply Chain Management.
The speaker informed the house that personal branding is not a new concept. It has been around in the business realm for a couple of decades. Personal brand is everything that one brings to the table which includes skills and Values. Personal branding can be defined as "It's the perception of others about you based on the values you deliver to them". The speaker highlighted that one cannot control the perception of others about oneself but definitely can influence it. Personal brand should mirror one's actual character, and should be based on one's qualities, uniqueness, aptitude and capability.
The talk was highly enjoyed by the participants which included Faculty members, students and industry personnel.

WIE Track for TechX Congress is the Eastern Indian Techno-Management Leadership Summit

IEEE, WIE Kolkata Section organized a WIE Track in TechX Congress is the Eastern Indian Techno-Management Leadership Summit organised jointly by two IEEE student branches.
Sudeshna Choudhury , Chair IEEE, WIE ,Kolkata Section address the students attending TechX Congress'22 on Data and Analytics Opportunities in the Industry. Dr. Sudipta Chatterjee , IEEE, WIE , R10 committee member briefed the students on IEEE and WIE . Dr. Ankita Pramanik , Vice Chair , IEEE, WIE , Kolkata Section moderated the track. Congratulations to IEEE SB NIT Durgapur and IEEE SB Jadavpur University for arranging this offline event in Shantiniketan very efficiently with 75+ participants in person.
The enthusiasm and response from the students on the quiz following the session was also worth appreciating and it was a pleasure handing out the awards to the winners on behalf of IEEE WIE Kolkata Section. IEEE, WIE sponsored 3 awards for the quiz winners.

Episode 6: Life and Work of Dr. Asima Chatterjee

On this 75th year of Independence, the D2D talk focused on the pioneer Dr. Asima Chatterjee who was the first woman to receive a Doctor of Science degree from an Indian university. Asima Chatterjee (1917-2006) was an Indian organic chemist noted globally for her work in the fields of Organic Chemistry and Phytomedicine from the pre-independence days despite the limited laboratory resources available to the scientists in India, during that time. Her most notable works include research on indole alkaloids, particularly of Rauwolfia, Rhazya, Alstonia species and their synthesis, the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs from Indian medicinal plants. She also authored a considerable volume of work on medicinal plants of the Indian subcontinent. One of theambitious dreams of Prof. Chatterjee was the establishment of an Institute for research and development of Ayurvedic medicines based on Indian medicinal plants, which was realized as the Central Ayurveda Research Institute with an attached Ayurvedic Hospital, in Kolkata.
It was mesmerizing to learn about not only her remarkable teaching and research activities of Prof. Asima Chatterjee but also her efforts towards contributing to society in terms of enhancing awareness to indigenous scientific research for one and all, establishment of House-wife Research Associates to counter the difficulties of bright young women who had to compromise her career for her child-rearing duties, amending the patent law in India to eliminate the colonial bias towards foreign manufacturing companies, and so on to name afew. She played a leading role in a number of scientific societies and Associations - she was elected the first woman General President of the Indian Science Congress Association in its 62nd Session, Delhi in 1975. She was nominated to the Rajya Sabha (1982-1990). The talk was delivered by Professor Dr. (Mrs.) Julie Banerji, PhD, PRS, FAScT, FISC, Former Khaira Professor of Chemistry, University of Calcutta. The audience of nearly a hundred, spanned across people from the disciplines of engineering, science, academia, industry, students, faculty members in different parts of India, who were enthralled by the life and works of Prof. Asima Chatterjee as the speaker Professor Dr. (Mrs.) Julie Banerji spoke eloquently about her mother.
The program began with a warm welcome by Ms. Sudeshna Choudhury, Chairperson IEEE WIE Kolkata Section and also Head of Strategy, Business Analytics, Analytics and Insights,Tata Consultancy Services. The volunteers welcomed the dignitaries on the dais with flower bouquets. Prof. Iti Saha Mishra, Chair Elect of IEEE Kolkata Section and Professor, Jadavpur University gave a brief introduction about IEEE and WIE and its activities. Prof. Sushmita Mitra, Chairperson of IEEE Kolkata and Professor(HAG), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata addressed the gathering through virtual mode. Prof. Susmita Sur-Kolay, ExCOMM Member IEEE WIE Kolkata and Professor(HAG), ISI, Kolkata introduced the speaker. After the talk Prof. Sudipta Chatterjee, Member WIE R10 and Professor, Jadavpur University presented a beautiful memento to the speaker thoughtfully chosen by Prof. Chatterjee and Ms. Choudhury. Dr. Ankita Pramanik, Vice Chairperson IEEE WIE Kolkata Section andAssistant Professor, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur offered the vote of thanks. The program ended with an exuberant note with all the participants who had gathered in offline mode coming together for a group picture. The success of the well-attended event could be gauged from the interactive questions and reminiscences from the audience.
