REBATES, LATE BUT NOT TOO LATE

The annual reports required for IEEE Sections to earn funding in the form
of a rebate were due on 22 February 2000. THANK YOU to the 224 out of 298
Sections who have submitted all three reports (Meeting activity, financial
activity and current officers). For those Sections that have not yet
submitted all or some of the reports, although you have missed the deadline
to earn the 10% bonus, the rebate can still be earned. The forms and
information can be found on the Web at www.ieee.org/ra/scs, select the link
for "Required Reporting". Please contact Vicki Waldman for reporting
status or with any questions: v.waldman@ieee.org, telephone +1 732 562

MAY 15 DEADLINE FOR 2000 IEEE/EAB AWARDS NOMINATIONS

The Educational Activities Board (EAB) is offering five awards: Meritorious
Achievement Award in Accreditation Activities, Meritorious Achievement
Award in Continuing Education, Major Educational Innovation Award,
Meritorious Service Citation, and the Employer Professional Development
Award. These awards are designated to specifically recognize individuals
and companies who make significant contributions to furthering the
professional development of IEEE members. For complete information about
nominating for the awards, access the EAB Awards page at
www.ieee.org/organizations/eab/arc/awards/index.htm, or contact Rae Toscano
at r.toscano@ieee.org, telephone +1 732 562 6526.

DESIGNED JUST FOR YOU

At the Section level, the IEEE History Center administers the IEEE
Milestones Program to honor significant achievements in electrical,
electronic and computer engineering. Details on the program and how to
propose a Milestone can be found on the History Center web site at

www.ieee.org/organizations/history_center/milestones_program.html.

After approval by the IEEE History Committee and IEEE Executive Committee,
a bronze plaque is cast with a cost of $500, and a dedication ceremony is
held by the Section to honor the achievement. Ordinarily, the Section is
responsible for the cost of the plaque. However, through a gift from the
IEEE Life Members Committee (LMC), Sections are now eligible for special

funding to cover the cost of the plaque: The LMC will be sponsoring up to
four plaques in the year 2000. Therefore, if you are interested in having
a Milestone within your Section, please visit our web site referenced
above. It contains the information you will need to get the ball rolling.

Please note that the nomination process, from beginning to end, can take up
to 6 months. So you will want to act quickly to be eligible for this
generous offer from LMC (note that other costs may be incurred by the
Section in conjunction with the Dedication Ceremony, but that in the past
corporate sponsorship has frequently been obtained for some/all of these
costs).

IEEE STATS & WEB APPS

New higher-grade and student member applications continue to surge ahead of
last year's record numbers. In just the first eight weeks of the calendar
year, IEEE has received 3,816 new higher-grade member applications (2,535
of them via the Web) for a 10% increase over the first two months of 1999.
Student member applications are showing a more moderate increase of 1.2%
over last year. 5,726 Student applications have come in in eight weeks,
nearly 23% via the Web. Last year, only 14.3% of Student applications came
in via the Web, so the rate of Web usage among prospective Student members
is increasing dramatically.

If this pace continues, IEEE could see nearly 26,000 Web applications in
2000. The web application form can be found at www.ieee.org/membership.

E-CONFERENCE MEETING, A BEST PRACTICE

On 29 January 2000 the full Region 3 Executive Committee met for their
first e-conference meeting. Thirty-one members participated from 9 states.
Prior to the meeting, all committee and entity chairs submitted their
reports via e-mail, and these were posted on the Web prior to the meeting.
The meeting lasted four hours.

Software used by participants included MSChat and mIRC. Training in use
of e-conference software and techniques was conducted at the fall ExCom
meeting in early December in Nashville, Tennessee. The IEEE server at
Piscataway, New Jersey was used and performed flawlessly throughout the
day.

In Region 3, e-conference techniques and technology have been under
investigation and development since early 1999, with the first phase
guidelines presented at Sections Congress 99. An ad hoc e-Conference
Committee was established this year to complete subsequent phases of the
guidelines. Other Region 3 committees have used the guidelines in numerous
e-conference meetings before conducting the region wide ExCom meeting in
January.

For further technical details, visit the web site
www.ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/e-conf/ or contact any member of the project team
listed there.
