January 2014 Meeting

Topic:It's All Politics: Why Community Engagement is Critical to Professional Development
Abstract: For a lot of people, politics calls to mind a lot of unpleasant things: politicians full of hot air, negative campaigning, and even the specter of corruption. It is no surprise that when surveyed, substantial numbers of Americans want nothing to do with politics, and often do not even want to hear or learn about it. But is it truly possible to live a completely apolitical life? And even if it was, would it be desirable? In an age where over 90% of job opportunities are never publicly advertised and technology and economic changes have blurred the lines between the personal and the professional, politics permeates every aspect of our careers. Learn how politics and community engagement are not as mysterious or unfamiliar as you may think, and why being involved is critical to your professional development as a technology professional.
