Modern Health Talk and The Future of Health Care

October 2013
Topic:Modern Health Talk and The Future of Health Care
Abstract: After briefly describing Modern Health Talk, the rest of this presentation follows a new white paper, Moore's Law and The FUTURE of Healthcare and trends such as: 1. The aging population and its impact on rising health care costs and pending doctor shortage; 2. New interest in Universal Design principles for homes and communities (also boomer related); 3. Healthcare Robots and all sorts of enabling technologies that must enable ways to fill that gap; 4. Healthcare could be a bigger driver of automation and M2M than smart homes; 5. Learning (e.g. NEST thermostat) needs more awareness, like from a patch sensing skin temperature; 6. Genetic research may soon conquer most inherited diseases while new therapies repair cell damage before it accumulates; 7. DNA sequencing, sensor monitoring, and shared medical records data join with phenotype to explode the Big Data analytics problem; 8. Medicine becomes Personalized and Personal (engaged patients); 9. The return of House Calls, but by a nurse or aid with video conference to doctor, backed up by Watson; 10. Growing awareness of the relationship of stress reduction and good sleep to health and work and sports performance; 11. Growing understanding of neuro-sensory interfaces and the mind-computer interface; 12. The convergence of Science and Technology (INFO + BIO + NANO + NEURO); 13. Obamacare can bend the cost curve but not enough to stave off the boomer impact, so more reforms are needed; 14. The stalled and polarized political system is unable to adapt policy and regulations fast enough to keep up, and this will only worsen with accelerating tech innovation. slides

HALT and HASS: A New Paradigm for Rapid Reliability Development

May 2013
Topic:HALT and HASS: A New Paradigm for Rapid Reliability Development
Abstract: This brief overview will discuss the basic methods of Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) which are run during the design phase of a program to find design weaknesses and eliminate them, and how Highly Accelerated Stress Screens (HASS) are developed from HALT. Even though the methods of HALT and HASS have existed for over 20 years, they are one of the most misunderstood methodologies in engineering. HALT and HASS are a fundamental paradigm shift in the development of reliable electronics hardware in that they are not used to determine a "life" prediction. HALT is a method to discover reliability weak links using the inherent strength limits found empirically in step stress testing. HASS is a production screening method to detect latent manufacturing defects based on the strengths found in HALT. A case history will show how one company achieved a 90% reduction in warranty returns after using HALT and HASS. This overview will also show how using HALT can help to accelerate the detection of software and firmware reliability issues. slides
Speaker:Kirk Gray, Accelerated Reliability Solutions
Speaker's Bio: Kirk Gray began working with Dr. Gregg Hobbs, the creator of HALT and HASS, at StorageTek Corporation in 1989, and has 20 years experience writing about, teaching, and using HALT. He has over 32 years in the electronics manufacturing industry beginning in the 1980's installing and servicing high vacuum semiconductor process equipment. From 2003 to 2010, he was a Senior Reliability Engineer at Dell, where he created and implemented the HALT to HASS development process on power supplies for client and server hardware that became a standard process for all Dell suppliers. The process was recognized for being the highest ROI (Return on Investment) ongoing reliability testing for the company. Kirk is a Senior Member of the IEEE and Charter Committee Member of the IEEE/CPMT Workshop on Accelerated Stress Testing and Reliability. He is a Senior Collaborator with the University of Maryland's Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) Consortium. C3: Correction Code Cryptography

March 2013
Topic:C3: Correction Code Cryptography
Abstract: C3 is a family of symmetric key cryptographic algorithms utilizing Error Correction Codes (ECC). The digital information to be encrypted is wrapped with a privacy layer of blended random and derived noise. Removing the derived noise is achieved simply with the correct set of keys. With incorrect keys, the attacker recovers information that is different from what was originally protected. ECC is used to remove the random noise. ECC is used in one form or another in all mobile devices to recover from communication transmission errors and/or data storage errors. By leveraging existing ECC resources, implementing C3 on a wide variety of devices/systems requires nominal additional resources. slides

What Customers Want - It's Not Another New Product

February 2013
Topic:What Customers Want - It's Not Another New Product
Abstract: "Innovation" means "new value," not "new products" nor "new technologies." It's much easier and more obvious to just make a new product and try to get people to buy it. However, this strategy is a near-guarantee of failure: the five-year failure rate for start-ups is about 19 in 20! So, to succeed, you must first determine what your customers seek. Unfortunately, customers are well-trained to ask for things and are often unable to explain themselves in any real depth. As Henry Ford put it, if he had asked his customers what they wanted, they would have asked for faster horses. The only way to understand what your customers seek, what they desire, where they experience pain, and undermet (or overmet) needs, is to study them in anthropologic detail. Several methodologies exist for doing this. This talk will profile several of them and focus in detail on the most powerful and strategic of the set, DIG (Demand-first Innovation and Growth). Applying DIG, you will discover that opportunity truly is hidden in plain sight. You just have to know how to look. slides
Speaker:Royce W. Johnson, PhD., QuarterInchHoles
Speaker's Bio: Dr. Royce Johnson has driven innovation, technical advancements, and life-saving products in biomedicine for three decades, with an emphasis on clinical systems and critical care physiology. After a 30-year career of instigating medical technology innovation from within industry, Dr. Johnson is now applying his skills and creativity to a broader range of clients with his consulting firm, QuarterInchHoles, which focuses on demand-first methods to power innovation. His career in medical innovation has evolved from technology incubation to his current emphasis on imbuing the front-end of innovation with a deep understanding of the customer. As he says, "the technology is the easy part." Trained in bioengineering, technology management, and strategic innovation, he is an expert in discovery and development of high-value opportunities across the clinical ecosystem. Forming the foundation of his very broad biomedical expertise, Dr. Johnson spent his early career with Ohmeda Critical Care and Baxter Edwards. These "industrial post-doc" years were the basis of his conviction that deep insight into the customer is the key to successful technology commercialization. Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in biology and bioengineering at the University of Utah and holds a certificate in technology and innovation from MIT Sloan School of Management. Now independently practicing in strategic innovation, Dr. Johnson continues to pursue his professional goal of applying and teaching the skills that enable large organizations to innovate effectively.

Enabling Cyber-Physical Systems with Real-Time High-Performance Computing, Measurement and Control

January 2013
Topic:Enabling Cyber-Physical Systems with Real-Time High-Performance Computing, Measurement and Control
Abstract: In this presentation we describe a new generation of modular, heterogeneous, reconfigurable and embedded real-time high-performance computing systems (RT-HPC) to enable Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) that combine sensing, communications, computing and control of "systems of systems" such as the Smart-Grid or a swarm of unmanned robots. The RT-HPC systems discussed in this presentation make use of parallel processing and heterogeneous architectures for solving complex, computationally intensive scientific and engineering problems that involve input/output signals, within real-time constraints. The heterogeneous architecture takes advantage of the state-of-the-art multi-core CPUs, Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to perform scientific and technical computations in real-time, with streaming temporal/spatial data (inputs) and online actuation/control (outputs). We will present examples of a wide spectrum of applications and scientific/engineering challenges that can be tackled by CPS, using RT-HPC systems in such industries as Energy, Transportation, Communications, National Security, Health and others.

Thermal Management Techniques for Light Emitting Diodes

April 2012
Topic:Thermal Management Techniques for Light Emitting Diodes
Abstract: Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are expected to replace the incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in the next few years. LEDs conserve less power, thereby saving more energy, and also provide an environmentally sustainable technology. According to Department of Energy it is estimated that switching to LED lighting over the next two decades could save the country $120 billion in energy costs, reduce the electricity consumption for lighting by one-fourth, and avoid 246 million metric tons of carbon emission. However, there are some barriers for deployment and this is due to the efficiency of LEDs measured by Lumens per Watt and is impacted by two technological challenges:

1. Driver Efficiency (Efficiency in Integrated Circuits which provides a stable power to the LED)

2. Thermal Management (Efficiency of LED impacted by the junction temperate of LED. Heating impacts the CCT and performance of LED).

The techniques used to solve the efficiency uses are discussed in the presentation. These include development of innovative driver integrated circuits for LEDs and new types of thermal interface materials for reducing the LED junction temperature. slides

High Performance Low Power Cacheless Computer System with Deterministic Power Management

August 2004
Abstract:A cacheless computer system comprising a central processing unit (CPU) and a high speed transition buffer interacting with different computer system resources such as address controller, main semiconductor memory and input output devices by means of plurality of system buses. The transition buffer contains starting memory locations of each jump or branch location of the program. When a branch or jump instruction is encountered by the CPU, it fetches the starting locations from the high speed transition buffer executing at CPU speed. When multiple instructions are executed from the transition buffer, enough time is available to the address controller to access the remainder of the branch or jump program located on the slower, low power, low cost DRAM type memory. The program then continues to be executed from the parallel blocks of memory pre-fetched and available on parallel memory blocks without access time requirements until the program is completed or a next jump or branch instruction is encountered. The size of the program that can be executed without interruption can be the size of the entire main semiconductor memory. The system also works on multiprocessing system where cache coherency problems are eliminated. Time critical real time applications are more deterministic, Digital signal processors (DSP) for real time applications are able to implement larger programs without cache miss and latency problems. A new compiler is required to compile the program for the unique requirements of this architecture. Timing characteristics of the implementation is understood well in advance at the compile time.
