The 19th BME Bio-Tech Applications Contest

                    February 11, 2017

The 19th IEEE Bio-Tech Applications Contest will take place on February 11, 2017. Location:  Caltech, Moore Building (93 on the map), Moore Lab, room B270 (starting at 11:00 AM). This event will be held courtesy of the Department of Electrical Engineering.  See applicable links for directions, campus map, and parking information. (Note: There is open parking on the west side of the building.  Visitors should avoid parking in any named spot.  There is no charge for parking on Saturday.) Organized as a part of Interacademic Cooperation.

The 18th IEEE Bio-Tech Applications Contest will take place on February 6, 2016. Location: The USC main campus, Salvatori Computer Science (SAL) Bldg, first floor, SAL-101 – courtesy of the USC Department of Biomedical Engineering. Starting at 11 AM.  See the map links for driving directions and location. Map A,   Map B  . Enter USC through Gate 1 (Exposition Blvd and Watt Way). The SAL Bldg. is located close to Gate 1 (B6 section on the color map). For more details go to this link. Organized as a part of Interacademic Cooperation.

The 17th IEEE Bio-Tech Applications Contest took place on February 7, 2015. Location: Claremont Graduate University (CGU), Burkle Building, room 14, (starting at 10:30 AM). This event will be held courtesy of the CGU faculty members.   See applicable links for directions, campus map, and parking informationAlso, Parking on the street is free.

The 16th IEEE Bio-Tech Applications Contest took place on February 8, 2014 at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), Pereira  Hall (PER on the map) room 120, (starting at 10:30 AM). This event will be held courtesy of the Department of Electrical Engineering. See applicable links for directions, campus map, and parking information.

The 15th BME Bio-Tech Contest - 2013; February 9, 2013, jointly organized with the Orange County Chapter and Orange County Student Chapter of the IEEE EMB Society, was held at UC Irvine, Natural Sciences II conference room 3201 (starting at 11:00 AM). NS-2 is building 402 on the campus map.  Driving directions. Parking information.

The 14th BME Bio-Tech -2012 event took place in Los Angeles/Pasadena, CA - February 4, 2012 at Caltech, Moore Building (93 on the map), Lecture hall, room 070 (starting at 11:00 AM). This event was held courtesy of the Department of Electrical Engineering.  See applicable links for directions, campus map, and parking information. (Note: There is a parking lot in front of the Moore building that can be used.  Visitors should avoid parking in any named spot.  There is no charge for parking on Saturday.

The 13th BME Bio-Tech -2011 event took place at UCLA Kinsey Pavilion 1200B. (starting at 11:00 AM).  Parking  arrangements see email, though we request that car pooling be used if possible. (See related links.  Map . For more details go to this link.

Tentative information

Eligibility: College students enrolled in six or more units.

Theme: To develop and present a concept using  Biomedical, and/or Biochemical, Electrical, Electronic, or related techniques to improve persons well-being or health, or  assist a persons’ disability, or to improve a persons’ ability to manage tasks that usually require assistance.

Requirements and Dates: Abstract of 50 to 500 words submitted for judging before January 31, 2017. All abstracts should be typed, using no smaller than size 10 font, and must not exceed four pages in length including any attached diagrams, schematic, and/or pictures. The abstract format: “Title; (below) Name(s) of the presenter(s) - (student(s) name(s) only); (No institutional affiliation(s) should be indicated) “. This format also applies to an introductory Power Point slide during the presentation which should be planned for 12-15 minutes. The concept submitted shall be that of the students, and shall note all references. The student shall present a brief overview of the basic concept, either a totally new idea or a conceptual modification to an existing item or system.  Prospective participants are strongly encouraged to submit early a letter/email indicating their anticipated participation.  Please email to Dr. Chris Druzgalski at druz[AT]ieee.org .  Include the following information: Name and address of the participant, tentative area or anticipated title of the entry.

Awards:
At some previous contests, depending on the sponsorship level, the college students with the best concepts and presentation received awards in the amounts of up to $1,000 (First Place), $500 (Second) and $200 (Third and Fourth Place). Also, the winners were recognized at the awards banquet being held during National Engineers Week. The previous contests were sponsored by
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and Circuits and Systems/Electron Devices Los Angeles Council Chapters and the Communications/Signal Processing Joint Chapter in addition to the IEEE LAC South Bay Section (support and sponsorship), the IEEE LAC Central Coast Section, and the IEEE LAC San Fernando Valley Section.
