Increasing demands on performance for PC type platform has lead to a corresponding increase in the performance demand of CPU voltage regulators (VR). The effectiveness of a VR is measured in terms of its electrical performance, cost, the spatial area/volume it occupies, and its physical location to the CPU. This demand tracks back towards the voltage regulators of the power supply unit that supplies input to these VR's. Overall system efficiency is a preferred approach to quantify the measure of the effectiveness of the power delivery system. This presentation will address some key technological issues and highlights of present CPU voltage regulators while providing some insight on future of voltage regulator technologies. Also, integration technologies emerging from VR ingredient developments will be provided.
