Dr. Esam Abdel-Raheem

Esam Abdel-Raheem is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Windsor, in Windsor, Ontario. Dr. Abdel-Raheem received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, in 1984 and 1989, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1995.

From September 1995 to January 1996 he was with the University of Victoria as a Research Associate conducting research in the design of 2-D filters. He then joined the Bell Canada Advanced Research Laboratory at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario, from February 1996 to December 1996, conducting research in bandwidth-efficient modulation techniques. In 1997, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department at Ain Shams University in Cairo. In 1999, Dr. Abdel-Raheem joined Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in Sunnyvale, California, as a Senior Design Engineer working in the design and implementation of DSP algorithms for home networking and Ethernet systems. In 2002, Dr. Abdel-Raheem was appointed as an Associate Professor at Ain Shams University. In 2003, Dr. Abdel-Raheem joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Windsor as an Associate Professor. He has also been appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Victoria.

Dr. Abdel-Raheem's research fields of interest are in digital signal processing (multirate, adaptive, multidimensional), digital filter design, signal processing for communications, digital modulation and transmission techniques, VLSI signal processing, computer arithmetic, and optimization techniques. He has authored and co-authored 50 refereed journal and conference papers, and one published U.S./world patent.

Dr. Abdel-Raheem has been involved in numerous academic and scientific activities. He served as the Technical Program Co-Chair (signal processing track) for the IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT) 2004 in Rome and ISSPIT 2005 in Athens. He also served as the Local Arrangement and Publicity Chair at ISSPIT 2001 in Cairo and as the Tutorial Chair at ISSPIT 2005 in Athens. He was a Member of the Technical Program of ISSPA 2003 in France and of ISSPIT 2003 in Germany, Eusipco 2006 in Italy, ICM 2006 in Saudi Arabia, and ICICT 2006 in Egypt . He served as a Review Committee member for IEEE ISCAS 2004, 2005, and 2007 and as a Reviewer for IEEE ICASSP 2003, 2005, and 2007, and several IASTED conferences. He is a Member of the Steering Committee of IEEE MWSCAS and IEEE ISSPIT. Dr. Abdel-Raheem is the General Co-Chair for IEEE ISSPIT 2007, to be held in Cairo, Egypt, in December 2007, and the Conference Chair for IEEE EIT, to be held in Windsor, Ontario, in May 2009. Dr. Abdel-Raheem serves as an Associate Editor for the CJECE.

Dr. Abdel-Raheem is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and is a senior member of the IEEE. He is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Signal Processing Education, the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Technical Committee on VLSI Systems and Applications, and the IASTED Technical Committee on Signal Processing. He is a Professional Engineer at PEO Canada.
