A Technical
Visit to Sultan Yussuf Power Station Cameron Highlands
This visit was organized by
Madam Jasronita under the subject of KEE3314 Power System Analysis with
cooperation of Electric and Electronic Department, Faculty of
Engineering and the IEEESB UPM. This visit is held on
8th August to 9th
August 2004.There were
37 students and 3 lecturers involved in this visits.
The
main objective of this visit is to increase the student knowledge on the
generation and utilization theory of power system which had been
learned. From this visit, it is also hope that it will clarify the
connection between generation and analysis of power system in electrical
system. Besides the objectives to clarify all the theory learned inn
class, this visit also giving a chance to students to have experience
about the socio economy and the culture of community in
Cameron Highland.
In this visit, the Museum of
Sultan Yussuf Power
Station clarified about
the chronology and history of hydroelectric station in out country. It
was also helpful to understand with drawings, figures, and pictures of
hydro stations which can be founded in their museum. There are also
models showed how water from river along Titiwangsa range is collected
and directed to the
stations through dam and underground tunnel. Sultan Yussuf Power Station
is operating to distribute electrical energy to consumers. Because of
this station use hydro power to generate the electrical energy, so the
time it takes to get the electrical energy is only 5 minutes after the
generator is on. This is different than the thermal station which takes
24 hours after the generation part is on. This is because it takes time
to produce steam. There are also stations which use it for the same
purpose. So, Sultan Yussuf Power Station really applicable to operate a
peak load station because it can patch the needs of the consumers of
electrical energy in a short time with this as advance, it also become
one of the first stations which supplied the capacity of energy to the
national grid if there is failure in electrical energy system in
Malaysia.
This
visit is very helpful in understanding the real concept of power
generation and utilization of a hydro station. The students will get the
real experience of job in this working field of power generation and
utilization.
