SAILING WITH SCIENCE 1:30pm-4:30pm

Get ready to head out to sea for a day of science on Monterey Bay. In this exclusive program, you'll sail on the SRV Derek M Baylis, a 65-foot sailboat designed for ocean research. The boat is certified for 49 passengers, but we will keep the group size to no more than 30 to maximize everyone's opportunities to actively participate in the research activities.

As the boat heads out of the harbor participants will learn about the history of Monterey Bay and how this resource rich environment has been utilized and studied over the years. During the three-hour expedition, participants will work alongside marine biologists on projects that include observing threatened sea otters and recording identifying tags and locations; sampling the ocean to measure basic biological and chemical indicators of ocean health; collecting plankton for the aquarium’s exhibits; and to deploy a research submersible (ROV) to observe benthic sea life. When watching for whales, dolphins and other migratory marine animals, you might get to hear their voices by deploying a hydrophone. Participants will also gain hands on experience with navigation and sailing.

All of this takes place on the waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, one of the largest and richest marine-protected areas in the United States. You'll enjoy a rare and enchanting view of the Monterey Peninsula shoreline and the waters of the bay.

The cost of this sailing adventure is $99 per person based on a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 guests.

This cost includes:

  • Associated Hosts staff
  • Private sailing charter
  • On board Naturalists
  • On board Marine Biologists
  • Assorted non-alcoholic beverages and snacks
  • Docking fees
  • All tax and gratuity

Today your guests will experience the best of the Monterey Peninsula. Our expert guide will accompany your guests first to Monterey's premier attraction, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Nearly one hundred innovative habitat galleries and exhibits will plunge your guests into Monterey Bay on a journey to its deep reefs, shale reefs, rock shores, turbulent tide pool sloughs, and sand sea floors.
