The city of
Calcutta (now renamed ‘Kolkata’), located in the eastern part of India, was
established by the East India Company in late 17th century as a center of trade
for the British. During the following centuries of British colonial rule, it
had served as the capital of India till the early 20th century.
It is located
beside the Hoogly river, a tributary of the sacred Ganges or Ganga and is the
center of rich Scientific, Arts and Cultural heritage. It is the only city in
India where all four Nobel prize winners from India had worked in their
respective diverse fields.
The IAS Calcutta
Chapter was officially started on 8th October 1997 with just about 20 members.
Over the last several years, our member strength has grown to over 50 and
stands to be :
·
The largest IAS Chapter in Region 10 West
·
The only IAS Chapter in India that is
independent and not a joint Chapter with other society
