Next Meeting: Thursday, July 24, Roadway Illumination, How May I Enlighten You?

At our next Meeting, James Mercier, P. E., Texas Department of Education, will lead a discussion on Roadway Illumination, asking the question, How may I Enlighten You? Texas does a more thorough practice of lighting up the roadways than do most other states. The intent of roadway illumination is to increase safety on Texas roadways for the motoring public. James draws on his experiences from when he was a Roadway Illumination Engineer to discuss the different types of illumination systems and the safety designs that are required in them. During his four years as an Illumination Engineer for TxDOT, James not only designed illumination systems, but also has many stories from inspecting new installations and investigating failures. The title of the presentation comes from his manner of answering the telephone when he was in Roadway Illumination. For more information on James' background, please see the announcement.

The meeting will be held at Grady's Bar-B-Q on San Pedro (no. 4). If you plan to attend, please RSVP to John A. Brogan, 210-353-3375 or jabrogan@ieee.org.

PES Changes its Name and Logo
The Power Engineering Society will now be known as the Power & Energy Society. The new PES Logo is shown at the top of the page. New trends related to increased public interest and awareness of energy topics, aging workforce in the power industry, and recruitment of young professionals to the field are critical for the survival of our industry and the PES. IEEE believes that the new name will provide a better focus toward our mission scope, our field of interest, our relationship with the public and our ability to recruit and maintain new members. For more detail see the December 15, 2007 letter to the membership that appeared in the January/February 2008 Power and Energy Magazine.

Continuing Education
Certificates. This meeting is credited as one hour. You may pick up your CE certificates for IEEE meetings at the meeting.

Thank you, David Costello of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.
Many thanks to David Costello, a Senior Application Engineer with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, who shared his paper, Distance Element Improvements - A Case Study, at our June meeting. David helped us understand how he used exhaustive root-cause analysis to uncover the causes of damage from a lightning strike and subsequent power outage at a petrochemicals plant. We appreciate him taking the time to share his knowledge with us.
