Nils Nilsson presenting the 2018 EMC Service Award to Kay Chen. John Yagielski, on the left, joins in awarding the best standard issued in the last two years, to the IEEE Std. 56 WG, Guide for Insulation Maintenance of Electric Machines. Jim Lau, the WG Secretary, receives the award on behalf of the WG, from the EMC Awards Chair, Nils Nilsson on the right. Kay Chen, on the left, joins in awarding the fourth place paper in 2018 to Constant Parameter Interfacing of Induction Machine Models Considering Main Flux Saturation in EMTP-Type Programs. Co-author Dr. Jatskevich accepts the award from EMC Awards Chair, Nils Nilsson. Jim Lau joins in awarding the third place paper for 2018 to A Partitioned Stator Variable Flux Reluctance Machine. Accepting this EMC Prize Paper Award is co-author Z. Z. Wu in the center from Nils Nilsson. Kay Chen, on the left, joins in awarding the second place prize paper for 2018, to Model Formulations for Synchronous Machine Models with Saturation and Arbitrary Rotor Network Representation. In the center, accepting the award is co-author, Aaron Cramer. Robert Thornton-Jones (center) being recognized at the 2017 EMC Annual Meeting in Chicago for winning The Distinguished Service Award, for his work on the Grid Code Task force. Kiruba Haran and Nils Nilsson congratulate the 2017 first place prize paper winners. The paper is entitled "A Nine-Phase, 18-slot, 14-pole Interior Permanent Magnet Machine with Low Space Harmonics for Electric Vehicle Applications". The authors are X. Chen, J. Wang, V. Patel, and P. Lazari. The EMC 2017 second place prize paper award was presented to the authors by Nils Nilsson and Kiruba Haran at the EMC Annual Meeting. It should be noted that all three prize paper winners made a five minute summary presentation of their paper at the EMC Annual Meeting. This paper was entitled "Acoustic Noise Reduction of Switched Reluctance Motors with Reduced RMS Current and Enhanced Efficiency". The authors are J. Bayless, N. Kurihara, H. Sugimoto, and A. Chiba. Kiruba Haran and Nils Nilsson congratulate authors on the third place 2017 EMC prize paper at the EMC Annual Meeting. The paper was entitled "Incorporating Dynamics in Mesh-Based Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Model of Synchronous Machines". The complete list of authors is R. Wang, S. Pekarek, M. Bash, A. Larson, and R. Van Maaren. Bill McCown (left) being recognized at the 2016 EMC Annual Meeting in Boston for winning the Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award. On his right is Lon Montgomery, his nominator, summarizing some of Bill's accomplishments. The actual presentation was made by the PES at the PES Awards Banquet two days earlier. The EMC recognized two (2) new Fellows in 2016. In the picture on the left, Kiruba Haran (left) and Nils Nilsson (right) congratulate Ping Zhou who is a member of the Motors Subcommittee. In the picture on the right, Clyde Maughan who celebrates his 90th birthday this year, is congratulated by Nils Nilsson. Kiruba Haran and Nils Nilsson congratulate the 2016 first place prize paper winners. This paper was also recognized as one of the two best papers in the entire PES at the PES Awards Banquet two days earlier. The paper is entitled "Distributed Adaptive Droop Control for DC Distribution Systems." The authors are V. Nasirian, A. Davoudi, F. Lewis and J. Guerrero. The EMC 2016 second place prize paper award was presented to the authors by Nils Nilsson and Kiruba Haran at the EMC Annual Meeting. It should be noted that all three prize paper winners made a five minute summary presentation of their paper at the EMC Annual Meeting. This paper was entitled "Decentralized Control of a Nine-Phase Permanent Magnet Generator for Offshore Wind Turbines," and it was authored by E. Prieto-Araujo, A. Junyent-Ferré, D. Lavèrnia-Ferrer and O. Gomis-Bellmunt. Kiruba Haran and Nils Nilsson congratulate Dr. Chiba on his third place 2016 EMC prize paper at the EMC Annual Meeting. Dr. Chiba has also been instrumental in the ongoing success of the EMC Motors Subcommittee. The paper was entitled "Development of a Rare-Earth-Free SR Motor with High Torque Density for Hybrid Vehicles." The complete list of authors is A. Chiba, K. Kiyota, N. Hoshi, M. Takemoto and S. Ogasawara. One of the sidebar activities at the PES Annual Meeting was the hiding of several "Zappy" the squirrels who get into electrical equipment and causes mayhem, at various places at the convention. The IEEE Standards Board hosted this activity. Anyone who found a Zappy stuffed animal could redeem it for a prize. The Zappy in this picture was found by a member of the EMC.
