Cloud-based and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies for Machine Tools

The advancement of manufacturing technology makes machine tools more sophisticated. However, as most machine tools work in long-term operations, some of their components may become aged or broken during production, which will reduce the quality of processed products or workpieces. Hence, creating intelligent functions, such as fault detection, manufacturing precision conjecture, and remaining useful life prediction, to ensure their reliability and production quality has become the prominent subject for the machine tool industry. Moreover, adding such kinds of intelligence to machine tools fits the trend towards smarter machines and manufacturing systems and is a key factor for machine tool companies to increase their competiveness.

In the past few years, the cloud manufacturing has emerged in academia and industry as a more advanced application of cloud computing. Cloud manufacturing integrates distributed manufacturing resources to support manufacturing activities in a product life cycle, such as product design, simulation, manufacturing, testing, and management. By using the properties and advantages of cloud computing, cloud manufacturing creates new business models for machine tool manufacturing enterprises to increase competitiveness and gaining profits in the globalized competitive market.

The proposed special session on “Cloud-based and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies for Machine Tools” at CASE 2015 solicits papers that involve cloud-based and intelligent manufacturing technologies, such as Automatic Virtual Metrology (AVM), Ontology Inference, Virtual Machine Tool, and Cloud Manufacturing, for machine tools. This special session aims to provide a forum for researchers, engineers, scientists, managers, and academics to discuss the state-of-the-art in Cloud-based and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies for Machine Tools. The session will be an opportunity to share both academic and industrial results and vision for the future of the machine tool industry
