Kumamoto City is located in the center of the island in the southwestern part of the Japanese archipelago called, "Kyushu." It is a city with beautiful, clean water and is adjacent to the majestic Mount Aso and all of its surrounding natural beauty. Kumamoto City has become an important branch point of Kyushu Tourism, with access beginning from the sky at the airport, being at center of the Shinkansen (bullet train) route between Fukuoka and Kagoshima, taking the car or bus to Aso/Takamori、there is also the ferry to the Nagasaki/Shimabara district, and a cross-express to Oita.
In the center of the city, there is the castle which Kiyomasa Kato had built 400 years ago and is one of three of Japan's lord castles. The three arcades: Shimotori, Kamitori, and Shinmachi make up the city's fashionable clothing shops, eateries, and other goods shops. Underneath not only Kumamoto City, but also Kumamoto Prefecture is rich groundwater which is suitable for drinking. Kumamoto City is the only city in Japan capable of providing tap water via its groundwater for a population of more than 500,000. In 2012, the United Nations gave Kumamoto's water a high rating for its taste and the conservation activities it does, as well as blessing it with the title "Water of Life."Its high quality water is also used for urban agriculture which has led to Kumamoto being Japan's leading supply center of agricultural products.
A representative of the specialty products that can be purchased in Kumamoto are traditional foods, and arts and crafts products, as well as pottery. Recently Kumamoto's clean water and delicious food products have become popular throughout Japan. With rice as a raw ingredient for "Sake" and "Shochu", varieties of grape vines brought in from France to make wine, the "Kumamoto Ramen" shop which can be found worldwide, Kumamoto's famous "Basashi" (raw horse meat), "Bayaki" (barbecued horse meat), and a chinese food that can only be eaten in Kumamoto called "Taipiien", there is a wonderful assortment of delicious foods old and new.
