Engineers and scientists still dedicate too much effort trying to solve the computational problems they find in their professional endeavors. Problem solving tools exist and are quite powerful. However, their use requires a sound background in problem solving. This limits their potential use. That is why some authorities have stated that computational thinking should be focused towards problem solving.

IEEE Distinguished Lecturer

Power Line Communications Reloaded

Date: Thursday July 25, 2013
Time: 4:30 P.M.
Topic: Power Line Communications Reloaded
Speaker: Prof. Lutz Lampe, an IEEE distinguished lecturer
    from University of British Columbia
Location: Information Technology Building, Room A113B
    McMaster University
1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario L8S4L8
Cost: Free (Paid parking on campus)

Further details available from Prof. Steve Hranlovic hranilovic@mcmaster.ca

Abstract:
Power line communications (PLC) collectively refers to technologies that use existing power lines for data communications at frequencies (far) beyond the 50 Hz (or 60 Hz) mains frequency, including so-called distribution line carrier (DLC) and broadband over power lines (BPL). The single main advantage of PLC over other wired communications solutions is that the wire infrastructure is already in place. In fact, the electricity grid is the most ubiquitous infrastructure worldwide, and its extremely high penetration opens the door for a plethora of applications supported by PLC. On the negative side, power lines and power line grids have not been designed for data communications, which gives rise to the notion of a "horrible channel". While concept of communications over power lines has been with us for essentially as long as wire line and wireless communications, PLC has experienced waves of innovations at around the turn of the century and in the past few years. In this seminar, we will provide an introduction to and a partial overview of applications, standardization, regulatory, and communication technology aspects for PLC, with a focus on recent developments. This includes results on channel characterization, transmission and detection methods, and a discussion of recent developments in IEEE and ITU standardization. In this context, we will also highlight the use of PLC to support Smart Grid applications.
Speaker Biography:
Lutz Lampe is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His research interests span a wide range of topics in wireless communications and communications over power lines. He has contributed to the development of power line communications (PLC) systems since 1998, with a focus on signal processing for broadband and narrowband PLC systems. He is the recipient of a number of research and best paper awards, including the Best Paper Award at the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on PLC (ISPLC). He is co-editor of the book "Power Line Communications: Theory and Applications for Narrowband and Broadband Communications Over Power Lines" published by Wiley & Sons in 2010. In 2005, he was General Chair of the ISPLC, and since 2010 (re-elected 2012) he has served as the Chair of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on PLC. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society.

Are We Set to Embrace a DC Transmission Grid Future?

Topic: Are we set to Embrace a DC Transmission Grid Future?
Speaker: Mike Barnes, Professor of Power Electronic Systems at the University of Manchester
Date: Monday 2013-Jul-29
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Information Technology Building, Room 137
    McMaster University
1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario L8S4L8
Cost: Free (Paid parking on campus)
RSVP: To Prof. Nigel Schofield via email by 24th July nigels@mcmaster.ca

In the wake of globalisation, energy use and production is undergoing rapid changes. This necessitates new transmission topologies and infrastructure to allow new generation resources to be connected to existing and new load centres. For long distance electrical power interconnections, this ultimately means high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission, a research and development sector experiencing rapid advances in technology.
The lecture will review recent developments in HVDC transmission, specifically voltage-source converter driven HVDC (VSC-HVDC) schemes; it will review plans and installations globally, offer a review of the VSC-HVDC technology and converter schemes; and highlight research and development challenges and bottlenecks to be overcome.

Speaker

Speaker's Biography:
Mike Barnes, SMIEEE, MIET, C. Eng., is Professor of Power Electronic Systems at the University of Manchester. His main research focus is the integration of offshore wind through HVDC Grids. He has managed projects on Wind-farm integration with the network, VSC-HVDC and FACTS modelling for National Grid, Siemens T&D, Alstom Grid and TNEI.
Mike has published over 100 papers in the area of power electronics and power electronics enabled systems. Mike is a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the IET and Chartered Engineer.

High Definition Closed-Circuit Television (HDcctv) offers the ability to upgrade existing coaxial cable video surveillance infrastructure from Analog NTSC or PAL to digital High Definition.
It does this by sending uncompressed digital video signals along with associated audio and control at a data rate of 1.485Gb/s. This very high data rate does suffer significant loss in the coax cable but the loss is recovered with adaptive equalization at the receivers using techniques pioneered in the broadcast industry and now in everyday use in their millions.
Rohinton asked him to make sure that his talk is not overly technical and appeals to a broad electrical engineering audience.

Data-driven methods such as independent component analysis (ICA) have proven quite effective for the analysis of functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) data and for discovering associations between fMRI and other medical imaging data types such as electroencephalography (EEG) and structural MRI data. Without imposing strong modeling assumptions, these methods efficiently take advantage of the multivariate nature of fMRI data and are particularly attractive for use in cognitive paradigms where detailed a priori models of brain activity are not available.

This talk reviews major data-driven methods that have been successfully applied to fMRI analysis and fusion, and presents examples of their application for studying brain function in both healthy individuals and those suffering from mental disorders such as schizophrenia.

Dinner Speaker Information

Jan Carr received a Ph.D. in power systems from the University of Waterloo, as well as an M.A.Sc. in Communications. He also has B.A.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto and a diploma in gas technology from Ryerson Institute of Technology. He has more than 30 years experience in the electricity sector and has extensive knowledge of electricity industry restructuring, planning, regulatory affairs, and policy development. In 2005, Jan Carr was named as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Power Authority, the agency that helps implement Ontario’s long-term energy strategy. He retired from that organization in the summer of 2008.

Abstract:

Over the next 20 years Ontario will see a significant change in the way electricity is produced, delivered and used, according to a discussion paper released 2006-Nov-15 by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). In a speech to the Association of Power Producers of Ontario the day before in Toronto, Jan Carr, the OPA’s Chief Executive Officer, pointed to flexibility as one of the key principles of his organization’s long term plan. "Flexibility is the only way we can respond to the uncertainties inherent in forecasts of economic growth, load growth and the potential technological breakthroughs in both conservation and supply," he said.
  1. energy and electricity in our modern economy and lifestyle
  2. technology’s role in elasticity of energy supply
  3. historic achievements in Ontario electricity
  4. conclusion: Ontario’s electricity policy needs engineering input

Abstract:
Future vehicle power-train concepts will invariably encompass dual or multiple off- or on-board energy sources, each of which will have a distinct electrical interface characteristic. This feature, coupled with dynamic electro-mechanical load profiles and wide thermal operating environments has a significant impact on the design of power-train components. The presentation will discuss typical specification requirements for electric vehicle power-train components and their interconnection. It presents examples of component design and system integration via results from traction machine, generator and auxiliary component design studies, and finally reviews the impact of the power-train energy source on grid utilities.
