About VIT University

Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, the institute was declared as a University in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in 2001 and was renamed VIT University. The University has since grown by leaps and bounds – establishing excellent infrastructure replete with state‐of‐art laboratories, digital library, smart class rooms, hostels, gyms, swimming pools, auditoria, indoor and out‐door stadiums spread over 350 acre eco‐friendly campus. To fulfill the vision of the founder and chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, VIT today comprises nine constituent schools and interdisciplinary centers offering graduate, post graduate and research programs up to Ph.D level. Of the 17,000 students, largely residential, nearly one fourth is women. About 1100 qualified faculty members and 1000 administrative staff facilitate the process of shaping the students professionals with a holistic attitude. VIT is the first educational institution in India to get international accreditations for its programmes. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom and the Energy Institute, United Kingdom have audited the Teaching‐Learning Processes at VIT and accredited the respective programmes, in the year 2004. VIT has 80 MoUs with institutions in India and from countries like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA in various disciplines towards exchange of faculty and students, joint programs involving courses as well as research and improvement of laboratory and library facilities.
