Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim Bin Mohamed Yatim was born on 17th April 1959 in Singapore. He had his primary and secondary education up to GCE "O" levels at St Andrew's School, Singapore. He then moved on to Malaysia to further his studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur in 1976. After obtaining his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from UTM in 1979, he was attached to Lembaga Letrik Negara (LLN) now known as Tenaga National Berhad, Batu Pahat for 5 months before he continued his studies at Portsmouth Polytechnic (now University) United Kingdom and obtained his Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree in 1981. In 1984 he obtained his Masters Degree in Power Electronics from Bradford University, United Kingdom and in late 1986 he once again went to Bradford and completed his PhD program in 1989.
His academic career at UTM began on 14th September 1981 when he was appointed as Assistant Lecturer. Subsequently he was appointed Lecturer in 1984, Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor on 16th January 1999.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim also has held various administrative posts in the faculty which includes Head of Power Electronics Lab from 1993 to 1994, Head of Power Electronics Panel in 1994, and Course Coordinator for the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program from 1996 to1998, Head of Energy Conversion Department from 1999 to 2002 and he is currently the Deputy Dean for academic affairs since August 2002.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim is also active in professional activities and member of a number of professional bodies. He is a senior member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and a registered professional electrical engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). He has been active in the IEEE Malaysia Section as member of the Executive Committee from 1999 to 2001. At IEM, he was a member of the Examinations Board Committee and currently he is a member of the Engineering Education Committee. He is now the IEEE Student UTM Branch Counselor and IEM Student Branch Faculty Advisor.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim is active in research and was the leader of three IRPA projects and sub leader of one IGS project. He is a member of the Fuel Cell UKM-UTM IRPA research team and currently leads the motor drive section. He had been appointed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment to evaluate various IRPA and IGS project proposals. In 1993 Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim was a visiting researcher at Virginia Power Electronics Center, USA, considered to be one of the top research centers in Power Electronics.
He has published more than 60 technical papers in journals and conference proceedings. Some of his papers have been cited by researchers from Japan, Korea, Australia, USA and Europe. He has also refereed many international and local journals and conference papers. Among these are the IEEE Transaction in Power Electronics, IEEE Power Electronics and Drives Conference, IEM Journal, Jurnal Elektrika and Jurnal Teknologi.
Among the awards that Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Halim has won includes the Malaysia Industry/University DSP Design Award by Texas Instruments in 2000, UTM Local Journal Publication Award in 2000, UTM Excellence Award in 1998, UTM Best Research Team Award in 1997 and UTM International Journal Publication Award in 2003.
