Milestones in the History of IVEC

Vacuum Electronics Conferences 1955 -1995

IEEE EDS International Electron Device Conference

  • An annual, prestigious, highly selective international conference hosted papers on vacuum electronics from 1955 to 1995

Microwave Power Tube Conference (Monterey Conference)

  • A biennial, classified, US-only conference launched in 1974  was sponsored by the DoD Advisory Group on Electron Devices (AGED)

Tri-Service Cathode Workshop

  • A biennial workshop started in 1978, with military services as rotating hosts, sponsored by DoD AGED

International Vacuum Microelectronics Conference

  • An international conference Initiated in 1988 by Henry Gray and Capp Spindt, with IEEE Electron Device Society (EDS) sponsorship
  • Primarily focused on field-emission devices and applications

European Space Agency (ESA) Space TWT Workshop

  • An international, triennial workshop founded in 1989 that was sponsored by the ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre

IEEE Plasma Science Society International Conference on Plasma Science

  • Vacuum electronics was a subset of this annual, international conference, which began in 1973

The 1990s Bring Changes

Tri-Service Cathode Workshop becomes the International Vacuum Electron Sources Conference (IVESC)

  • NASA added to the host rotation for Cathode Workshop in 1990
  • NASA replaced the Air Force as sponsor in 1994
  • NASA tasked by AGED to terminate Cathode Workshop and turn it into an IEEE conference
  • IVESC initiated in 1996 sponsored by IEEE EDS

The International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IVEC), 1997-present

In 1997 the International Technical Committee for Vacuum Electronics formed

  • Technical Committee was given oversight of technical conferences
  • First IVEC conference held in Monterey in 2000
  • IVEC meets biennially in the US and has alternated between Europe and Asia every fourth year
