DICTA 2019 best student technical paper award
Organised by Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)
(Sponsored by the IEEE WA Section)
As per DICTA tradition, the organising committee nominated four outstanding papers to receive best paper awards. The winners of these awards, which were announced during the conference banquet at MV James Stirling, a high-class Captain Cook Cruise Vessel, while enjoying the exquisite buffet dinner and cruising the beautiful Swan River, were. IEEE WA section sponsored the following award:

This year, the APRS International Conference on Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA) held in Perth from 2-4 Dec, 2019. Established in 1991, DICTA, which emerged as a truly international event, continues to showcase some of the most exciting advances in image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a series of keynote talks, oral presentations, poster sessions and various tutorials/workshops.
DICTA2019 offered an outstanding technical program with keynote presentations from four distinguished researchers: Professor Kyros Kutulakos (Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto, Canada), Professor Mubarak Shah (Center for Research in Computer Vision, University of Central Florida, USA), Dr Ivan Laptev (INRIA Paris, France), Professor Ian Reid (University of Adelaide, Australia).
As a truly international event, DICTA2019 attracted research paper submissions from different countries across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. To ensure the quality of the conference, each submission underwent a rigorous double-blind review process, with at least three independent reviews solicited before a decision was made. Based on the recommendations of the reviewers, the Technical Program Committee has accepted 82 high-quality papers to be presented at the conference. 37 of the accepted papers are from outside Australia, from 13 different countries.
Thirty-eight (38) of the accepted papers have been presented in the following seven oral sessions. The remaining accepted papers were presented in two poster sessions. All accepted papers presented in DICTA2019 have been published in the conference proceedings by the IEEE and archived in the IEEE Explore digital library.
Besides the main technical program, DICTA2019 has also put together a post-conference workshop day at University of Western Australia on the 5th of December 2019.
5th September: 4th Annual Engineers Networking Event
Organised by Women in Engineering at Edith Cowan University (WIEECU)
(Sponsored by the IEEE WA Section)
It was a great pleasure to be involved in the 4th Annual Engineers Networking Event which was organized by Women in Engineering at Edith Cowan University. Our IEEE Student, Young Professional, and Women in Engineering members really enjoyed this event as it was like no other networking event as attendees go to learn vital soft skills through engaging sessions by industry experts and also participate in activities through the event that encouraged attendees to effectively mingle with one another.
9th May: Green Electric Energy Park site visit: Power generation of the future
The IEEE Curtin University Student Branch organised a site visit to Curtin University's Green Electric Energy Park (GEEP). GEEP is unmatched in Australia, and serves as a model for future renewable energy laboratories. It has been hailed as one of the "new initiatives in Power Engineering education" by the IEEE Power and Energy Society. Our members were shown live demonstrations of Renewable Energy power generation including futuristic Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Micro-grids.
26th April: Curtin University student presentations
The IEEE WA section and WA PES/PELS chapter provides student prizes annually to Curtin University Engineering students. The prizes are on the basis of academic achievement the previous year. In this case the prizes were for academic results in 2018.
Unfortunately there were no IEEE WA section or PES/PELS chapter representatives present on the day. The prizes were presented by the Discipline lead of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Assoc Prof Sumedha Rajakaruna.
The WA section prize for outstanding achievement in the core second year units in the Bachelor of Engineering was presented to Sahil Parekh.
The PES /PELS prize for the highest aggregate marks in ELEN 3001 Power System Analysis and ETEN 3003 was presented to Ferry Lanter.
Congratulations to both students for their outstanding academic achievements during 2018.
28/29th March: IEEE Curtin University Student Branch, Curtin Robotics Club, and Curtin IET
Intro to Robotics Hackathon
From the 28th of March to the 29th, the IEEE Curtin University Student Branch in collaboration with the Curtin Robotics Club and Curtin IET on Campus, hosted the Intro to Robotics Hackathon.
On the first day of this two day Hackathon, the participants were welcomed with a crash course in Arduinos and Lego Mindstorm, along with a variety of sensors. The Arduinos and Sensors were generously funded by the IEEE WA Section.
Day two was Competition day, where participants create a simple and silly robot that can interact with an everyday object. The Student Branch had invited some key Curtin staff from the Engineering Departments and a few industry reps to help judge and offer guidance.
This event was very successful with over 50 participants and 10 teams competing. The IEEE Curtin University Student Branch plans to do a similar event later in the year.
