Recent Activities
2012 ACTIVITIES
- IEEE
West Virginia Section had its End-of-Year Gathering on Friday, December 14th. Dr. Parviz Famouri, the
2013 IEEE region 2 director-elect, was the guest and spoke about his plans for the region
in the coming year, 2013.
- On Wednesday, October 3, the
IEEE WV section officers had an officer's meeting at the Fifth Quarter
in Charleston. Upcoming section activities and section strategies
were discussed. Information will be added to the website when it
becomes ready for roll out.
- On Tuesday, June 19 at 6:00
pm at the Little Creek Park in South Charleston, the WV Section of the
IEEE hosted a family picnic for its members. Those who attended
had a very nice time.
- On May 8th, the WV Section of the
IEEE hosted a technical meeting. Frank McMullen gave a talk on
"Arc Flash Analysis". Frank McMullen is an Electrical &
Instrumentation Engineer, DuPont, Belle, WV. He is originally from
Sistersville, WV. Frank received a BSEE degree from WVU Tech in
December 2010. In the three summers prior to that, Frank served an
intern at the DuPont - Belle Plant performing the arc flash analysis
for the site's electrical service equipment. Upon completion of his
degree, he began working full time at Belle in his current role.
- The IEEE WV section of the IEEE, in
conjunction with the WV ISA, hosted the annual college student
competition in technological innovation in engineering, science, and
math. Like last year the competition was a joint event sponsored by
IEEE WV section and ISA organization. The best 5 student applications
were invited to present a 15-20 minute oral presentation at a section
meeting scheduled for April 24, 2012 at Panera Bread at Southridge on
Corridor G outside Charleston. During the meeting, three or more
projects will be selected to be presented at the International Society
of Automation Product Show May 17 at WVSU in Institute where the final
decisions on any awards are made. All those invited to present at the
meeting will receive a certificate.

The West Virginia Section of the IEEE hosted a technical
seminar on Power Systems Analysis Software on Tuesday, March 20 at 5:45 pm at
the Fifth Quarter Restaurant (Natty Bumpo Room) located in Charleston, WV.
The presentation included a short discussion and exhibition
of each of three of the most widely used Power Systems software programs in the
industry. This included ETAP, SKM and
Easypower. The presenter was Sheila Brown, Power Systems Engineer for Eta
Engineering Consultants, PSC in Catlettsburg, KY
- There was an IEEE technical presentation on Wednesday,February 29, 2012 at the Fifth Quarter Restaurant in Charleston, WV.
Our presenters were a Robotics Team called "Prototype Posse team 2821"
from Charleston Catholic High School, sponsored by IEEE WV
Section Treasurer Neil Chakrabarty. They are the Winning alliance
captain team for North Carolina for 2012 and are eligible to compete
in the world FTC championship in St Louis MO April 25 though 28.
- On Friday, January 20 at 5:45 pm, the IEEE West Virginia Section officers met at
Panera Bread, located in South Charleston (Southridge Center located on
Corridor G). Discussions included the officer change for 2012 and
some anticipated activities/presentations for the upcoming
months. A disucssoin regarding the section budget was also held.
2011 ACTIVITIES

On Wednesday,
November 2 at 6:00 pm, the IEEE West Virginia Section had a
presentation by Dr. Stephen Goodman. The presentation was titled
"A Grid connected PV system in Charleston, WV."
The presentation took place at Panera Bread, located in South Charleston (Southridge Center located on Corridor G).

- There was
an IEEE Section meeting on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 5:45 pm at
Panera Bread at Southridge Center, Charleston WV (Corridor G) . The
agenda included a presentation by Russ Safreed, P.E. regarding
Motor Torque and Horsepower Considerations when applying Adjustable
Speed Drives.

- There was
an officer's meeting on Tuesday, 5/10/11 at 5:45 at the Fifth Quarter
Restaurant in Charleston, WV. Topics discussed were possible
upcoming meetings and field trips. The officers also reviewed
the recent IEEE/ISA competition pictures and winners (see below).
- IEEE and ISA (International Society of Automation) cosponsored the third annual college student competition in
technological innovation in engineering, science, physics or math on
Wednesday, April 27 at Panera Bread in Southridge (South Charleston -
Corridor "G".)
