IEEE Orlando Section Executive Committee Meeting

Date: Thursday, April 10th, 2025

Time and Agenda:
- 6:30PM - 7:00PM - Dinner
- 7:00PM - 7:45PM - Presentation by Dr. Susanne Lee
- 7:45PM - 8:30PM - Orlando Section ExCom Meeting

Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Susanne Lee, from L3Harris

Topic: "The status of semiconductor manufacturing in Asia, chip uses in society, and how their education is impacting Asia’s ability to manufacture chips, and how it all compares to the USA."

Abstract: Semiconductors are *the* key technology underpinning nearly all critical global technologies. Countries leading advances in state-of-the-art chip technology and manufacturing control global economies. How the related digital transformation, manufacturing, sustainability, inventions, and talent development have been pursued in Asia to support leadership in this key technology is quite different than in the United States. The contrast between the approaches in these two regions will be discussed.

Bio: Dr. Lee is a Technical Fellow and Technology Director for the Imaging and Laser Systems (ILS) Division of the Integrated Mission Systems segment at L3Harris Technologies. Previously she served as the ILS Senior Engineering Manager and before that as the Senior Scientist leading the Quantum Technologies program at L3Harris. She has many patents from award-winning inventions like lensless imaging array technology, to photonic receivers based on non-linear photon processes, to a unique high-energy portable x-ray laser. Prior to employment at L3Harris Technologies, she worked at numerous General Electric companies spanning diverse technologies from harsh environment oil and gas refinery sensing, to x-ray inspection of operating automotive and industrial parts, to inventing and designing high-intensity x-ray sources and imaging systems that are now deployed in hospitals and inspection companies worldwide. During this work, she collaborated with scientists and engineers across Asia and Europe that resulted in multiple global patents, several of which became commercial products. To produce these products, she led the setup of manufacturing sites in several Asian countries. Prior to GE, Dr. Lee was a university professor for nearly a decade and a half, graduating more than a dozen Ph.D.s. She has a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University, and an S.M. and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University.
