5 October: IEEE Day networking event

This year, IEEE WA Section hosted their 2021 IEEE Day Networking Event at 5 pm to 7 pm at the QT Hotel, Perth. 40 IEEE members had registered to attend the event. IEEE WA Section Chair, A/Professor Farhad Shahnia, gave a brief summary of the activities of the IEEE WA Section in 2021, the new initiatives and shared the recognitions news that the Section has received. He invited all interested IEEE members to step up and volunteer themselves for the IEEE WA Section’s 2022 Committee.

The recognition for the chapter with the highest number of technical activities and highest membership growth were also presented.


Since 2020, IEEE WA Section has been awarding annually two virtual trophies to two of its most active technical chapters. One trophy is for a technical chapter that has held the highest number of technical events in the previous calendar year. The Second trophy is for a technical chapter that exhibits the highest membership growth for their society in the last membership year. This year, the WA Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Chapter has won both of the trophies with 9 technical events in 2020 and 54 membership increase in 2020-2021. The winner was announced during the 2021 IEEE Day Networking Event on 5/10/2021, at the QT Hotel, Perth. Dr Muhammad Adnan Hayat, the 2021 Vice-chair of the Chapter presented the IES Chapter at this event.

7 September: WA Section 2021 Educational Workshop

Organised by the IEEE Western Australia Section


To provide further local benefits for our local members, the IEEE WA Section has started arranging educational workshops since 2021. This year, a workshop was planned and held on deep learning and its applications for signal and image processing on September 7th, which attracted 42 registrations. This event was led by the 2021 IEEE WA Section Educational Activities Coordinator, Dr Shams Islam.

3 August: WA Section 2021 Technical Forum


Organised by the IEEE Western Australia Section


IEEE WA Section hosted their 2021 Annual Technical Forum, focused on Technology for Tomorrow, on 3 August 2021 at the Double Tree by Hilton Waterfront. This cross-disciplinary technical event has started for the first time in WA this year. This event was a great opportunity for about 30 IEEE student members, members and guests attending the event to hear talks from local experts in various areas under the umbrella of IEEE. The IEEE WA Section would like to make special thanks to Jeremy Parry (Director of DLS Pathology Services and Consultant Pathologist at Western Diagnostic Pathology), Benjamin Dias (Technical Solutions Consultant - Process Automation, Honeywell Ltd.), Glenn Butcher (Technology company builder with 25 years’ experience in senior management at Amazon, Atlassian, and diverse technology startups) and Dr Amar El-Sallam (Chief Science Officer & Co-Founder, Advanced Human Imaging) who were the forum’s invited speakers.

6 July: 2021 mid year Networking and Social Dinner

IEEE WA Section hosted their 2021 mid-year social and networking dinner on 6 July 2021 at Beiyrut restaurant. This social event has been going on in WA for several years, and this year, about 50 IEEE members and guests attended the event. This year’s event was again a great opportunity for some members to catch up and meet each other after several months and networking. This year’s event also included a prize-giving ceremony at the beginning of the event, in which the Section Chair announced the winners of the Section’s 2021 Student Competition (which was held on 1 June 2021 at the campus of Murdoch University with the participation of students from local four universities). Mr Remember Samu (from Murdoch University) and Steward Qie (from the University of Western Australia) received the winner and runner-up awards for this competition. All participating students also received a token of appreciation for their participation in the contest.

1 June: 2021 Annual Student Competition

2021 Perfect Ptich competition flyer


The IEEE Western Australia Section hosted its 2021 Annual Student Competition on 1 June 2021 at Murdoch University. In total, 6 graduate student members had participated in the competition representing 3 universities of Western Australia. The students presented interesting talks on power systems, power electronics, IT and machine learning topics. A panel of experts from universities and industries were also invited to assess the presentations of the students. The winners will be announced and will receive their prizes during the IEEE WA Section mid-year networking event on 6 July 2021.

6 February 2021: Section Training Workshop

The IEEE WA Section hosted a training workshop on Saturday, Feb. 6^th for introducing the recently joined members to the Section Committee and the newly elected Chairs of the sub-units with the procedure, policies and requirements of the IEEE, MGA and IEEE WA Section.
