Special Symposia Celebrating 50 Years of Robotics
IROS 2011 will feature a series of special symposia to celebrate the achievements of the last fifty years of robotics and to articulate a vision for the future of the field. Each special symposium will consist of one or more 90 minute sessions consisting of invited talk(s) and invited paper(s), with invited papers being presented either in the conventional format or during a multimedia session. Invited talks will feature presentations that only require abstracts. They do not require papers that go through the IROS review process. Abstracts for invited talks will be published in the Conference Proceedings DVD but not in IEEE Xplore. Invited papers with presentations in the conventional or multimedia format will feature regular, full-length papers that will go through the regular IROS review process. Note that all regular and invited papers will be subject to the same, rigorous review process by the IROS Conference Editorial Board. Symposia Proposals There is considerable flexibility in organizing each symposium session. Sessions are broken up into six slots of 15 minutes each. Invited talks can be 15, 30, or 45 minutes long. Invited paper presentations will be 15 minutes long. Papers selected for multimedia presentations will feature 5 minute teaser presentations during the symposium session and a symposium session can feature groups of three multimedia teasers taking 15 minutes per group. Some examples of symposium sessions are given at the bottom of this page.

Proposals for organizing 50 Years of Robotics Symposia should be submitted through Paperplaza as "Invited Sessions". The proposals should include:
(a) The names and affiliations of the organizers;
(b) A brief abstract limited to 1 page describing the theme and content of the symposium; and
(c) The proposed format for the symposium including a list of invited talks and invited papers, with titles and authors.
Symposium organizers are strongly encouraged to start with an invited talk that provides an overview of the specific area and the research challenges. This may be either just an short, 15-minute overview of the specific area given by one of the organizers or someone else in that session, or a longer 30 or 45 minute keynote talk. Organizers should note that this format lends itself to organizing industrial panel discussion or forums (for example, with six invited talks) and demonstrations of products (for example, with one overview talk and five demonstrations).
Review of Symposia Proposals Symposia proposals will be reviewed by the symposia chairs and members of the senior program committee for content, cohesiveness, and relevance. Note that symposia proposals and papers will be reviewed independently. In other words, acceptance/rejection of an invited paper will not impact acceptance/rejection of the proposed symposium. Similarly acceptance/rejection of a symposium will not impact acceptance/rejection of the invited papers included in the proposed symposium. Examples of 50 Years of Robotics Sessions Example 1 Invited talk (30 minutes) 3 multimedia teasers 3 invited papers Example 2 Invited talk (45 minutes) 9 multimedia teasers Example 3 Invited talk (15 minutes) 5 invited papers Example 4 6 invited talks (15 minutes each)
