Grants and Awards
Generous donations from individuals, institutions, agencies, and
companies provide for a variety of financial support opportunities to
attend the NSS/MIC conference or short course program. This support is
provided in the form of grants, each having specific requirements and
credited against conference expenses. The NPSS Paul Phelps Continuing
Education Grant, the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation
Travel Grant, the NPSS Child Care Assistance Grant and the Conference
Trainee Grants will be available in 2017.
Several awards are also available. The specific application deadlines
are shown in the description for each award below. All applications and
recommendations must be submitted online.

2017 NPSS Child Care Assistance Grant

Description: |
The NPSS is offering child care
reimbursement of up to USD 400 per family as a Pilot Program
to assist conference attendees who incur additional
childcare expenses by attending an NPSS conference. Further
information is available on
the NPSS web site. |
Grant: |
Maximum of USD 400 for each NSS
recipient and USD 400 for each MIC recipient. The grants
will be in the form of reimbursement for allowable expenses.
This year we expect to make a minimum of five NPSS Child
Care Assistance grants for NSS and five NPSS Child Care
Assistance grants for MIC. |

Recommendations: |
The selection committee will
recommend applicants to the general chair for final
selection. Preference will be given to applicants in the
early stages of their careers who are IEEE NPSS members. |

Description: |
To promote continuing education and
encourage membership in NPSS. |
Grant: |
Maximum of USD 750 for each NSS
recipient and USD 750 for each MIC recipient, mostly for
tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses/Tutorials, but in
selected cases, possibly for partial travel or hotel room
costs to attend an NSS or MIC Short Course. The grants will
be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward
Short Course tuition and/or partial hotel room costs. This
year, we expect to make a minimum of two NPSS Phelps grants
for NSS and two NPSS Phelps grants for MIC. |

Sciences Society. |
Eligibility:

Outstanding NPSS Student Members, Postdoctoral Fellows who
are Members of NPSS, and unemployed Members of NPSS who need
assistance in changing career direction. |
Recommendations: |
Grants will be made according to the following criteria:
Exceptional promise as a Graduate Student or Post Doc in any
of the fields of NSS or MIC, or
Exceptionally good work in those fields for currently
unemployed NPSS members, with the expectation that
attendance to one or more of the Short Courses will result
in improved possibility of obtaining a job in one of the NSS
or MIC fields. The
selection committee (consisting of the Program and Short
Course chairs or their designees) will recommend candidates
to the General Chair for final selection. |

There will be a limited number of grants for support of

Applicants must have submitted an abstract to the 2017 NSS,
MIC or RTSD. Based on technical merit, the technical program
committees will recommend candidates to the scholarship
committee for final selection. Applicants will be notified
in early July. Grants will be made according to the
following criteria until all available funds are committed:
The support for these grants comes from different sources.
Some grants may have restrictions, e.g., limited to IEEE
members. Grant recipients will be expected to write a letter
of thanks to the sponsor which provided the funds for their
trainee grant. |
Recommendations: |
Applicants need to have their
supervisor/mentor(s) complete online letters of
recommendation by June 12, 2017. The request for a
recommendation is sent directly to the E-mail address for
your supervisor/advisor listed in your grant application. If

The purpose of the Valentin T.
Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant Jordanov
Travel Grant) is to promote graduate-level study and
research on radiation instrumentation and to promote
membership in the IEEE. |
Grant: |
Jordanov Travel Grant awardees will
be reimbursed for approved expenses of up to USD 1500
associated with traveling to, and participating in, the IEEE
NSS/MIC. |
Funding: |
Funding provided by the IEEE
Foundation. |
Eligibility:

Recipients must be graduate students
or individuals who have obtained their highest degree less
than five years prior to the start of the NSS/MIC.
Preference will be given to applicants in the field of
Nuclear Electronics with accepted abstracts for the NSS/MIC.
Candidates should show exceptional promise in the field of
Radiation Instrumentation. |

Academic Advisors/Supervisors will be
asked to submit an online letter of recommendation by June 12, 2017.
Recommendations should address financial need, demonstrated
technical merit, career intentions and worthiness of the
candidate. The Scholarship Committee may seek additional
information to clarify how candidates meet the requirements. |

Description: |
For outstanding student oral or
poster papers presented at the NSS and MIC. The purpose of
these awards is to encourage both outstanding student
contributions and greater student participation as principal
or sole authors of papers as well as to acknowledge the
importance of student contributions to the fields embraced
by NPSS. |
Award: |
The two best papers (two awards for
each NSS and MIC) will receive cash awards of USD 500 each
and a certificate. The two runners-up will
receive a certificate. |

Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference
budget. |
Eligibility:
|
Any student who is the principal or
sole author/researcher and the presenter of either a poster
or an oral paper at the NSS or MIC and who has been
identified as an eligible student. If there is a tie,
preference will be given first to IEEE NPSS members, then to
IEEE members, and finally to non-IEEE members. |
basis for judging: |
The
on-site awards committee will rank the papers for technical
content and originality first. Other criteria such as
graphic display and clarity of data presentation may be
considered. |

When possible, awards will be
presented the conference. If this is not possible, the
recipients will be notified by mail or e-mail. |

science through education. The
nominee is not required to be a member of the NPSS or IEEE
but, where candidates have otherwise equal qualifications,
preference shall be given to the candidate who is a member
of the IEEE. |
