Humanoid avatar robots are potentially well suited for hazardous environments because they are able to work for long periods, can be made immune to various hazardous materials and have a human-like form, providing the potential for highly capable mobility and manipulation. Their financial cost may be justifiable since the financial costs of deploying humans are typically large in hazardous environments.
We will discuss recent advances at The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) towards such humanoid avatar robots, including Team IHMCs approach in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC). In 2013 Team IHMC achieved first place in the Virtual Robotics Challenge and second place in DRC Trials. We will discuss bipedal walking and balance algorithms, as well as coactive design of operator interfaces for humanoid robots.
