Forum on the European Public-Private Partnership in Robotics (PPP)

Date: June 3, 2014 (Tue)
Time: 14:00-16:00
Venue: Convention Hall

The European Union has set up a Public-Private Partnership in Robotics (PPP), which is an initiative to further strengthen Europe's position in civilian robotics. It is defined by the partnership of European Commission and European stakeholders from research and industry and it aims at a strategic positioning of European robotics in the world and ensuring its benefits for European economy and society at large. It is set to become the largest publicly funded research and innovation program on civilian robotics in the world with €700M in funding from the European Commission for 2014 – 2020, which is tripled by the European industry to yield a total investment of €2800M (approx. US$3900M). The initiative is based on a Public-Private Partnership between the European Commission and the Brussels-based European robotics association euRobotics AISBL, which serves as a platform and network of European stakeholders in robotics. In euRobotics AISBL, more than 180 member organizations bring in their expertise from industry, research and innovation. Experts from euRobotics AISBL member organizations work in “Topic Groups” to advice on market domains which would bring maximum results in terms of economy and benefits for the society, and launch a multi-annual roadmap. Based on this roadmap, the stakeholders develop recommendations to the Commission for targeted actions within the area of robotics under Horizon 2020, the European Union's new research and innovation program. The PPP initiative will be announced officially on 3rd June 2014 by EU Commission’s Vice-President, Neelie Kroes, during the opening of AUTOMATICA fair in Munich, Germany. This will match the large academic community at ICRA in Hong Kong at ICRA. This forum will present the new PPP initiative, give an update on the European robotics research and innovation in Horizon 2020 and discuss opportunities for regional, national and international programs in robotics.

Speakers:

  • Juha Heikkilä, DG CONNECT – Robotics, European Commission
  • Paolo Dario, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy
  • Ralf Koeppe, KUKA Laboratories GmbH, Germany
  • Tamim Asfour, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany

Forum on Robotics Challenges and Competitions

Date: June 4, 2014 (Tue)
Time: 14:00-16:00
Venue: Convention Hall

Organizer: Bruno Siciliano (University of Naples Federico II)

Since the eighteenth-century Longitude Prize and the 1927 Orteig Prize as well as the challenges of today on driverless vehicles and suborbital spaceflight, there are great examples of challenges driving innovation. Aimed at extraordinary breakthroughs, storied outcomes or multiple innovation returns on the total program costs, all of these initiatives share the strive for questioning the status quo. In the field of robotics, competitions have demonstrated their potential for fostering research and development, as well as supporting the transfer between academia and industry over the last decades. The goal of this forum is to compare recent programs on challenges and competitions and share common experiences. The current developments from the DARPA Robotics Challenge will be dealt with in the presentation by Masayuki Inaba who has led Team Schaft to win the trials. Three European initiatives will be surveyed after a general presentation on benchmarking and shared infrastructures by Juha Heikkila. Aníbal Ollero will report on the status of euRathlon, an outdoor robotics challenge for land, sea and air, while Matteo Matteucci will survey RoCKIn which has promoted two robotics challenges, one at home and one at work. Daniel Gurdan will focus on the three EuRoC challenges on production, logistics and services aimed at bringing innovative solutions to the European manufacturing industry.
