Moving in Rome
Coming to Rome
Airplane: Fiumicino and Ciampino airports are both about 30 Km from the centre of Rome and are both well linked with the two principal railway stations (Termini station and Tiburtina station) by trains. Rome's main airport is well-connected to the center during the day by a direct train and slower trains. The direct train between Fiumicino and Termini costs € 11,00 and takes approximately 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines, ticket offices and other vendors at both Termini and Fiumicino.
schedule: every 30 minutes
Fiumicino - Roma from 6.37am until 11.37pm
Roma - Fiumicino from 5.52am until 10.52pm
There is another train connecting Fiumicino airport to central Rome - when you are at the airport train station look for the train with the destination "Orte" or "Fara Sabina". It is slower (and cheaper) because it stops at some smaller local stations along the way and does not stop at Termini. Trains take about 45 minutes to reach Tiburtina. Tickets cost €5,50.
schedule: every 15-30 minutes
Fiumicino Airport - Trastevere - Ostiense - Tiburtina from 5.57am until 11.27pm
Tiburtina - Ostiense - Trastevere - Fiumicino Airport from 5.06am until 10.36pm

Rent a car
If you need to move frequently and for long distances, or if you are in a group, it can be useful to rent a car (in the airports, in the railway stations and in many points of the city there are many companies that offer this kind of service). But you have to keep in mind that in the historical centre of Rome cars are not allowed to enter (to the exclusion of taxi and buses), in almost all the parking lots in the streets you have to pay (blue stripes, € 1,00/h, from 7:00 to 19:00 and in some areas from 7:00 to 23:00), moreover the traffic and the problems in finding a parking place are not to be undervalued! So think carefully before taking a car.
