Activities in 2004
2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002
Visit of Professor Alain Germond
On the 30th
of March 2004, Professor Alain Germond from Ecole Federale Politechnique de Lausanne – Switzerland, presented a tutorial for students on the topic “Genetic
Algorithms Applications in Power Systems”. Undergraduate students, PhD and
postgraduates, representing 20 members and 16 non-members, attended the event.
The talk was oriented on optimal location based genetic algorithms of FACTS
devices in power systems. The attendees benefited of printed materials given by
Prof. Germond.

“EUROSTAG
– Users’ Club Meeting” 2004
Starting with March
28th, 2004, the chapter was involved, together with National Power Grid Company “Transelectrica” S.A., in co-organization of the “EUROSTAG – Users’ Club Meeting” by Tractebel (Belgium) and
EdF (France). The meeting was held at National Dispatching
Centre. Amongst other highly interesting presentations professor Mircea Eremia
spoke in his lecture named “Doctoral School Researches in Power Systems” about
an initiative towards establishing a high quality doctoral research programme
with international participation. Another mark has to be stressed for Dr.
Rodica Balaurescu’s paper “PSS Tuning into the Romanian Power Grid”, an
excellent presentation on current progress with this topic in the power systems
area.

Open
doors to encourage young researchers
On the 12th
of May, within the premises of Electrical Power Engineering Department of
University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, a one-day student workshop has been
organised by the PES chapter. The event organised under the label “Open
Doors to Encourage Young Researchers” was the venue of several
presentations delivered by graduates and Ph.D. graduates, with a target
audience formed of undergraduate students, IEEE student members and academics.
There were 5 presentations concerning, amongst others, “The assessment and
control of voltage and power oscillations in modern power systems”, “Modélisation de
générateurs éoliens et l’impact sur un réseau électrique de distribution”. The presentations
were results yielded through diploma projects or PhD research stages elaborated
in European countries, in the framework of Socrates Programme. It has been an
outstanding opportunity for future specialists to learn how to structure their
research and argumentation. Some 40 students took part into the event. (some 50
students graduates yearly in electrical power engineering in UPB)

Voluntarly participation at FOREN 2004
In the period 13-17
June 2004, the bi-annual WEC (World Energy Council) Regional Energy Forum -
FOREN 2004, took place in Neptun. Dr. Jean Constantinescu,
member IEEE, General Manager of “Transelectrica” S.A., had a key position in
organizing of the conference. Also, the Romanian chapter voluntarily supported
the event with Professor Mircea Eremia, chair of the chapter, chairing section
II of the conference “The technical dimension of sustainable development”. |
Professor George Gross Distinguished Lecturer at TRANSELECTRICA
In line with this statement
between June 28th and July 1st Professor George Gross,
from University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, was invited as Distinguished Lecturer of
IEEE Power Engineering Society.
During his visit he delivered two lectures. The first one, entitled “Congestion in Power System Operation”,
was organized, on the 29th of June, on the premises of National
Power Grid Company – “Transelectrica” with the participation of specialists
from National Dispatching Center (System Operator), Commercial Operator as well
as engineers involved in the power industry. The target audience reached 12
members and 15 non-members.
The event attracted a
massive interest from professionals given the fast rhythm imposed on
deregulation and establishment of an electricity market within Romania. The
presentations provided insights in different market models and associated
behaviours and problems. The overall outcome that a range of experienced and
future engineers received a first-class view on advancements in this field. In
addition some delicate mechanisms behind the scene of market operation have
been explained and clarified.
A short presentation of the event was published in "Region 8 News" |
Professor George Gross Distinguished Lecturer at University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest
Within the visit at Bucharest as
Distinguished Lecturer, Professor George Gross, presented, on the 30th
of June, the second talk entitled “Transmission
Issues in Electricity Markets”, held at the Electrical Power Engineering
Department from University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, had the privilege of a
large audience (professors and students) encountering 24 members and 10
non-members. The event was well received by all students. Educational course of
high level was given on the new challenges in power systems. The blackouts
experienced in the last years in power systems from different countries as well
as lessons learned were emphasized. |
International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Power Systems - SIAE 2004
The IEEE Romania PES
Chapter has been supporting also the development, selection and organisation of
the International Symposium on “Artificial Intelligence in Power Systems” –
SIAE’2004 (2nd edition), held in Galaţi (Romania), on September
29-30, 2004, with directly involvement of Prof. Gheorghe Cartina and Prof.
Mircea Eremia. The event tends to establish itself as a regular meeting of all
power industry specialists with interests in the applications of the artificial
intelligence tools to power sector. Target audience was formed of engineers of
various background involved or interested in the electricity business, talking
about their research or applications related to the use of artificial intelligence. |
International Conference on Electrical and Power Engineering - EPE 2004
The chapter co-sponsored the organizing and the works of the 3rd International
Conference on Electrical and Power Engineering – EPE, held at Electrical
Engineering Faculty from Technical University “Gh. Asachi” of Iaşi (Romania),
on October 7-8, 2004. The IEEE-PES members, professors at the same university,
Mircea Gusa, Virgil Alexandrescu, Gheorghe Cartina and Mihai Gavrilas, were
directly involved in organizing the conference. The event attracted a wide
range of participants coming from all sectors of electrical engineering,
including electric power, power engineering industrial applications of
electricity and so on. The conference gave an excellent opportunity for
academics and specialists from industry to share their researches and concerns
and helped once again to bring together industry and education sides of the
engineering. |
Voluntarly participation at Conference ICATE 2004
In the period 14-15 October 2004, the 7th International
Conference on Applied and Theoretical Electricity – ICATE 2004, was voluntarily
co-organized by the IEEE Romania Section, with actively participation of IEEE
PES members. |
Socrates schoolarship students in European Union countris
IAnother event has
been organized by the chapter in co-organisation with the IEEE RoPES Student
Branch, in November 12th, again within the premises of Electrical
Power Engineering Department of University POLITEHNICA from Bucharest. The
event targeted the activities of the students involved from the Power
Engineering Faculty in the European Union exchange program for students SOCRATES.
The event was organized as a round table, and the best papers were published in
Energetica revue (special dedicated issue), the most prominent professional
journal in the filed of power engineering in Romania. The event represented an
excellent opportunity to promote educational options for undergraduate students
to attend courses abroad in prestigious universities across Europe. The
attendance encountered 16 members and 21 non-members, mostly of whom were
students in power engineering. |
