Introduction a l’urbistique
Upon the invitation of IEEE Romania PES Chapter, in
collaboration with the Power Engineering Faculty from University
"Politehnica" of Bucharest, Mr. Jean-Marc Revaz, Chief Executive
Officer of SYNERGY Groupe (Martigny-Switzerland) and Manager of CREM (Centre de
Competence en Urbistique de Martigny), delivered three talks. The first presentation, entitled
“Introduction a l’urbistique”, was held on 11th of April for undergraduate students, Master
and Ph.D. students, dealing with advanced technologies used in distribution
systems and the architecture of the utilities network existing in Martigny.
“All-in-one” designed systems were the core of the presentation.

L’instruments de
l’efficacite energetique applique a la MDE (Metre de la demande d’electricite)
The second talk of Mr. Jean Mark Revaz was
delivered on 12th of April, under the name “L’instruments de l’efficacite energetique appliqué a la MDE (Metre de la
demande d’electricite)”,
opened for Master and Ph.D. students as well as for engineers from industry, where
some management issues of utilities network were presented.

Situation de l’industrie electrique
europeenne dans un marche ouvert
The third lecture of
Mr. Jean Marc Revaz was presented, on 14th of April, for students as
well as the academic staff members. Entitled “Situation de l’industrie electrique europeenne dans un marche ouvert”, the lecture introduced the attendees into the
operation of local distribution networks under the power market conditions.

The
history of the Romanian power system and famous engineers
In the honour of
great Romanian engineers, our chapter has now a tradition in inviting
personalities, like Costin Rucareanu, who talk, on 13th of April,
for students in power systems, at University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, about
“The history of the Romanian power system and famous engineers”. |
Power system security
and its impact on electricity market planning and operation
In line
with this statement between May 18th and 21st, Professor
Mohammad Shahidehpour, from Illinois Institute of Technology, was invited as
Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Power Engineering Society. During his visit he
delivered two lectures.
The first lecture, entitled
“Power system security and its impact on electricity market planning and
operation”, held on 19th of May, was organized on the premises of
National Power Grid Company “Transelectrica” S.A. with the participation of
specialists from National Dispatching Center (System Operator), Market Operator
as well as engineers for other power utilities. |
Power system
restructuring: market design implications
The second
presentation of Prof. Mohammad Shahidehpour, on “Power system
restructuring: market design implications”, was presented at University
“Politehnica” of Bucharest (UPB), on 20th of May, for 90 students
and academic staff members. The students showed their enthusiasm by asking many
questions about restructuring and electricity market. Prof. Shahidehpour
presented also powerful software developed at Illinois Institute of Technology,
under his guidance. |
Student contests
Two student contests were organized at University “Politehnica” of
Bucharest, with a large participation with papers. It must be mentioned that 50
students in power systems and 25 students in applied sciences in power systems
graduate yearly at University “Politehnica” of Bucharest. The two contests
were:
The best student paper award - Electrical Power
Systems, on May 6th
The best student paper award - Electricity Market, on May 7th |
Celebration
of the OCA award
On 5th of July, the
Chapter, with a large number of members, celebrated the recognition of its
achievements through the Outstanding Small Chapter Award 2004 – runner up. |
Advanced
electrotechnic equipment. Testing technologies
Prof. Petre-Marin
Nicolae was involved in co-organizing of the Round Table “Advanced
electrotechnic equipment. Testing technologies”, on September 22nd,
at the University of Craiova, during the WEEK OF ROMANIAN ELECTROTECHNICS. The
event had a large audience from practicing engineers, students as well as
professors. |
Summer School:
Virtual Balkan Power Centre - Renewable Energy Sources
The IEEE RoPES Student
Branch Chapter in cooperation with
EESTEC Romania, having also the support of the IEEE RoPES Chapter and
University of Ljubljana, has organized at University “Politehnica” of Bucharest
the Summer School “Virtual Balkan Power Centre – Renewable Energy Sources”
between October 10th and 16th. Students from Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia &
Montenegro and Romania, and lecturers from Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia &
Herzegovina and Romania, participated at the summer school. The event was co-sponsored
by the National Grid Company “Transelectrica” S.A. and Distribution Company
“Electrica” S.A. The program was part of an FP6 project. |
International
Conference Energy – Environment CIEM 2005, Bucharest
The 2nd edition of
the International Conference Energy – Environment CIEM 2005, was organized,
with the voluntarily support of the IEEE members, at Power Engineering Faculty
from University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, between 20th and 21st of October. The
event tends to establish itself as a regular meeting of all power industry
specialists with interests in a broad range of power systems, from generation,
transmission, distribution and utilization of electrical energy, as well energy
policy. This year event attracted more than 150 papers, with attendance
reaching some 200 people. The target audience consisted of engineers of various
background involved or interested in the electricity business, talking about
their research or applications in the electrical power engineering area. |
Power System
Conference 2005, Timisoara
The Chapter co-sponsored the organizing and the works of the
6th edition of the Power Systems Conference PSC 2005, held at University
“Politehnica” of Timisoara, between November 3rd
and 4th, 2005.
The IEEE-PES members,
professors at the same university, Adrian Buta and Stefan Kilyeni were directly
involved in organizing the conference. The event attracted a wide range of
participants coming from all sectors of electrical engineering, including
electric power, power engineering industrial applications of electricity and so
on. The conference gave an excellent opportunity for academics and specialists
from industry to share their researches and concerns and helped once again to
bring together industry and education sides of the engineering. |
Terminology
in power engineering
Very important in
engineering, and also in education, is the existence of standard terminology.
On 23rd of November, Academician Gleb Dragan presented a talk on
“Terminology in power systems” for students in power systems from University
“Politehnica” of Bucharest. |
Evaluation of
transient stability using hybrid methods
The program “Open
doors to encourage young researchers”, which becomes a regular event organized
by the Chapter, was concretized in 2005 by the talk given by eng. Constantin
Surdu, researcher at IDEA-INPGrenoble, who presented, on 5th of
December, at University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, his researches related to
his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Evaluation of power system transient stability using
hybrid methods”. The event benefited of 50 students attending. |
Integration of young
researchers in the Europe of knowledge
The 2nd edition of
the round table “Integration of young researchers in the Europe of knowledge”
was organized by the chapter in cooperation with the IEEE RoPES Student Branch,
on December 16th, again within the premises of Power Systems
Department of University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest. The event targeted the
activities of the students involved from the Power Engineering Faculty in the
European Union exchange program for SOCRATES students. The best papers
have been published in Energetica revue (special dedicated issue), the
most prominent professional journal in the field of power engineering in
Romania. The event represented an excellent opportunity to promote educational
options for undergraduate students to attend courses abroad in prestigious
universities across Europe. The attendance encountered 4 members and 16
non-members, mostly of whom were students in power engineering. |
