Awards & Grants
Student grants to support attending the conference and short courses are available due to the generous support of individuals, institutions, agencies, and industrial sponsors. The Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant, the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant, and the Conference Trainee Grants will be available for the 2015 NSS-MIC. The application deadlines are shown for each award. All applications and recommendations must be submitted online. Information about nominations for other Awards is given in the IEEE NPSS Awards section below.

2015 Conference Trainee Grants
| Application Deadline: | June 5, 2015 |
| Description: | There will be a limited number of grants for support of trainees (graduate students and post-doctoral fellows) to attend the conference. Trainees are defined as graduate students. Post-doctoral fellows who graduated less than five years prior to the start of the conference may also apply. |
| Grant: | The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward the conference registration, workshop, and short course fees. There will be no support for travel or hotels. The exact number of grants will be determined by the available funding. |
| Funding: | Funded by sponsors of the conference. |
| Eligibility: |
If you apply for a grant, DO NOT register for the conference until you know the status of your application. The technical program committees will recommend candidates to the scholarship
committee for final selection. Applicants will be notified in July. Grants will be made according to the following criteria until all available funds are committed:
- First priority to students/postdocs who are first authors of accepted abstracts - Second priority to students/postdocs who are co-authors or presenters on accepted abstracts - Within any category, funds will be distributed according to the date the letter of recommendation is received The support for these grants comes from different sources. Some grants may have restrictions, e.g., limited to IEEE members. Grant recipients will be expected to write a letter of thanks to the company which provided the funds for their trainee grant. |
| Recommendations: | Applicants need to have their Academic Advisor/Supervisor/mentor(s) complete online letters of recommendation by June 19, 2015. Please be accurate in listing the email address for your supervisor. When a grant application is submitted a request for a recommendation is automatically generated and sent to the email address provided. |

Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant
| Application Deadline: | June 5, 2015 |
| Description: | The purpose of the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant Fund (Jordanov Travel Grant) is to promote graduate-level study and research on radiation instrumentation and to promote membership in the IEEE. |
| Grant: | Jordanov Travel Grant awardees will be reimbursed for expenses associated with traveling to and participating in the NSS-MIC, up to a maximum of USD 1500. |
| Funding: | Funding provided by the IEEE Foundation. |
| Eligibility: | Recipients must be graduate students or individuals who have obtained their highest degree less than five years prior to the start of the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium (NSS) and Medical Imaging Conference (MIC). Preference will be given to applicants in the field of Nuclear Electronics with accepted abstracts for the NSS-MIC. Candidates should show exceptional promise in the field of Radiation Instrumentation. |
| Basis for Judging: | Candidates should apply through the Online Application process. Academic Advisors/Supervisors will be asked to submit an online letter of recommendation by June 19, 2015. Recommendations should address financial need, demonstrated technical merit, career intentions and worthiness of the candidate. |

The 2015 Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant
| Application Deadline: | August 1, 2015 Nominees for our grant selection process should send their application forms (PDF Version, Word Version) to the respective NSS or MIC program chair. |
| Description: | To promote continuing education and encourage membership in NPSS. |
| Grant: | Maximum of USD 750 for each NSS recipient and USD 750 for each MIC recipient, mostly for tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses, but in selected cases, possibly for partial hotel room costs to attend the NSS or MIC Short Course. The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward Short Course tuition and/or partial hotel room costs. This year, we expect to make a minimum of two NSS Phelps grants for NSS and two MIC Phelps grants for MIC. |
| Funding: | Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. |
| Eligibility: | Outstanding NPSS Student Members, Postdoctoral Fellows who are Members of NPSS, and unemployed Members of NPSS who need assistance in changing career direction. |
| Basis for Judging: | Grants will be made according to the following criteria: Exceptional promise as a Graduate Student or Post Doc in any of the fields of NSS or MIC; exceptionally good work in those fields for currently unemployed NPSS members, with the expectation that attendance in one or more of the Short Courses will result in improved possibility of obtaining a job in one of the NSS or MIC fields.
The selection committee (consisting of the program and short course chairs or their designees) will recommend candidates to the general chair for final selection. |

The NPSS Child Care Assistance Grant (2015 Pilot Program)

| Description: | The NPSS is offering child care reimbursement of up to USD 400 per family as a Pilot Program to assist conference attendees who incur additional childcare expenses by attending an NPSS conference.

| Grant: | Maximum of USD 400 for each NSS recipient and USD 400 for each MIC recipient. The grants will be in the form of reimbursement for allowable expenses. This year we expect to make a minimum of five NPSS Child Care Assistance grants for NSS and five NPSS Child Care Assistance grants for MIC. |
| Funding: | Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. |
| Eligibility: | • Families where both parents are registered attendees at the conference • Parent (registered attendee) who brings child(ren) to the conference • Parent (registered attendee) who incurs additional expenses at home (above their normal child care expenses) while attending the conference |
| Basis for Judging: | The selection committee will recommend applicants to the general chair for final selection. Preference will be given to applicants in the early stages of their careers who are IEEE NPSS members. |
| Notification: | Successful applicants will be notified by October 1, 2015 prior to the conference in sufficient time to make plans before the Early Registration deadline. |

2015 NPSS Student Paper Awards
| Nomination Deadline: | All candidates for selection must have identified themselves at the time of abstract submittal. |
| Description: | For outstanding student oral or poster papers presented at the NSS and MIC. The purpose of these awards is to encourage both outstanding student contributions and greater student participation as principal or sole authors of papers as well as to acknowledge the importance of student contributions to the fields embraced by NPSS. |
| Prize: | The two best papers (two awards for each NSS and MIC) will receive cash awards of USD 500 each and a certificate. The two runners-up will receive a certificate only. |
| Funding: | Funded by each conference’s budget, as determined by each of the individual conferences sponsored by IEEE NPSS. |
| Eligibility: | Any student who is the principal or sole author/researcher and the presenter of either a poster or an oral paper at the NSS or MIC and who has been identified as an eligible student author will be eligible. If there is a tie, preference will be given 1) to IEEE NPSS members; 2) to IEEE members; 3) to non-IEEE members. |
| Basis for Judging: | The on-site awards committee will rank the papers for technical content and originality first. Other criteria such as graphic display and clarity of data presentation may be considered. |
| Presentation: | When possible, awards will be presented the conference. If this is not possible, the recipients will be notified by mail or e-mail. |
