Industry Luncheon on May 20, 2019

Theme: Human Robot Interaction - Research Challenges

With societal perspectives of artificial intelligence and robotics being distrustful, acceptance of robots will come with an understanding and trust in technology. Key opinion leaders Peter Cork and Siddhartha Srinivasa will discuss how furthering development in HRI will enable true acceptance and provide true value to society. The presentations will be followed by a question & answer period with the audience.

Speakers:
Peter Corke - Queensland University
Tapomayukh Bhattacharjee - School of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Washington

Introduction and Moderator:
Francois Boucher, Executive Vice-President, Kinova

Biographies:
Peter CorkePeter Corke is the distinguished professor of robotic vision at Queensland University of Technology, and director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Robotic Vision. His research is concerned with enabling robots to see, and the application of robots to mining, agriculture and environmental monitoring. He created widely used open-source software for teaching and research, wrote the best selling textbook “
Robotics, Vision, and Control”, created several MOOCs and the Robot Academy, and has won national and international recognition for teaching including 2017 Australian University Teacher of the Year.   He is a fellow of the IEEE and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, former editor-in-chief of the IEEE Robotics & Automation magazine, founding and associate editor of the Journal of Field Robotics, founding multi-media editor and executive editorial board member of the International Journal of Robotics Research, member of the editorial advisory board of the Springer Tracts on Advanced Robotics series, recipient of the Qantas/Rolls-Royce and Australian Engineering Excellence awards, and has held visiting positions at Oxford, University of Illinois, Carnegie-Mellon University and University of Pennsylvania.  He received his undergraduate and masters degrees in electrical engineering and PhD from the University of Melbourne.

TapoTapomayukh "Tapo" Bhattacharjee is a postdoctoral research associate in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington working with Professor Siddhartha Srinivasa in the Personal Robotics Lab. He completed his Ph.D. in Robotics from Georgia Institute of Technology under the supervision of Professor Charlie Kemp, received his M.S. from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, South Korea, and B.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India. He also worked as an R&D Lab Associate at Disney Research, Los Angeles and as a Visiting Scientist at the Interaction and Robotics Research Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Seoul, South Korea. His primary research interests are in the fields of haptic perception, manipulation, human-robot interaction, and machine learning. He believes in the potential of using multimodal sensing and perception to enhance robot manipulation capabilities in unstructured environments as well as around humans. He is an RSS Pioneer and his work has won Best Technical Advances Paper Award at HRI and Best Demonstration Award at NeurIPS.
